Sizing question

I'm not sure this is in the right place; if not, I apologize in advance.

Now for my question: I am making this dress for daughter. Since her bust measures 34, I usually make a 12 for her (which seems HUGE since she's 4'11" and weighs 100 lbs soaking wet, but that's what fits....) The back of this pattern envelope says 34 bust is a size 12, BUT the pattern pieces say 34 is a size 6. She lives 500 miles away and I don't know when I'll see her again, so I need to get this right. There have been several reviews of this pattern, and reviewers have said what size they cut, but nothing else about the fit. Help, please. thanks.

The measurement on the pattern piece may be the finished size, which for a size 6 would give 3 1/2" wearing ease. This allows for the dress to move comfortably around the body. Also keep in mind that pattern sizes and ready to wear sizes do not correlate at all, always go by body measurements.

I would try measuring the pattern at the waist and the bustline. Don't include seam allowances or darts in your measurement, just the circumference of the bodice itself as it would be after you assemble it. Compare those measurements to the size chart on the envelope. Now the pattern will include some ease, probably about 2" in the bust and 1" at the waist. So if you measure the pattern as 36" in the bust, then it's designed to fit a body that is 34" in the bust. That's the size 12 on the size chart. You can ignore whatever is printed on the pattern, just rely on the actual size of it. I've seen several instances where the printing on the pattern tissue conflicts with what's on the envelope, or is just plain erroneous. I hope measuring solves your problem.

Ditto to what Lindy Ann said. The measurements given on the pattern pieces will say: finished size. The sizing on the back chart is what size to buy for what measurement. (I assume New Look does it the way the Big 4 do). Definitely measure the pattern pieces, to be sure!

Agree...and sure wish they would put those finished measurements in spot that is easier to view without unfolding all that tissue! Yes, a few show up on envelope backs, but not often....especially bust and waist!

In 1994 I was at a Pfaff convention in Vegas. The rep from McCall's announced that their patterns would have the finished measurements on the envelopes. In my mind was Yay, but what took you a hundred years to get to do this? She said they had been battling TPTB (i.e. the men) on this issue, the men not understanding why this was necessary or important. Duh!

Wonder how many of those men sewed? Hmmm.
