I know most pattern envelopes have the yardage printed in 45" & 60" widths, but I don't always shop for fabrics with the pattern in hand. I've been using 60" fabric and have a general idea how much yardage I need. But for situations where I fall in love with a fabric and it's in different width, I'm lost as to how much to buy. This happened last spring, I fell in love with a fabric and ended up buying about twice the amount I need because I didn't know how to convert from 60" to 45".

Since then I found this handy chart that already has it converted.

I printed it out and keep a copy in the sewing room and one in my purse. So when I'm shopping, if I know I need 3 yards at 60" I just pull out the chart and see I need 4 1/8 yards at 45"

Charts are great, but remember they are just guidelines and none of these numbers are written in stone. For example, if you have a pattern piece that won't fit on a folded piece of 45" fabric or something that is cut on the bias, you might need more than is indicated on this chart. Just a heads up. :)

I've been carrying one of these for years.

I have not checked lately, but at least one of the pattern companies did have a chart in their store pattern book.

You and I must be on the same wavelength. I had just printed a few copies of this out a few days ago!

Thanks for this post. I cleaned out my wallet and predictably several useful items are now missing. Printing out this chart. Great reference.

One reminder...if your fabric has a large repeat or is a plaid, buy at least half a yard to a yard extra for matching purposes.

Years ago these charts used to be behind every cutting counter! Only problem I see with it is fabric is no longer 45" wide.
