I always make a muslin when sewing a new pattern for the first time. I sew during the day when I'm home alone (sew peaceful!) however fine tuning the muslin by yourself can be very frustrating. A zipper can be your best friend. Purchase an "open ended" zipper about 20" long. Baste the zipper into a side seam of your bodice or dress muslin (Pull tab under your armpit). Open zipper into the two halves, slip muslin on and close zipper. You now have a muslin that fits without pins and you can easily see where adjustments need to be made. Once you're happy with the fit and have transferred alterations to your pattern, remove the zipper from the muslin and use again next time. Added bonus.....practise sewing in zippers!!

I''m a little dense but when you write "open-ended" zipper, do you mean a separating or jacket-style zipper? Anyway this is a wonderful idea, thanks.

Yes. That's the one. The kind that separate like in the front of a jacket.

What a great idea. I MUST buy some "open ended" zippers about 20" long" at Wawak next time I order. They seem to have the best deals. Sometimes Amazon or eBay has great deals, too.

Bijou13, you should post this in "tips and techniques" so more people will see it.
