I like to finish my clothes on the inside to look as nicely finished as possible. I am working on my first fitted shirt and started looking at my husband's shirts for ideas. I understand the burrito technique for the yoke and collar is coming around. My question is how do they finish the sleeves so that it is a nicely enclosed seam? Are sleeves sewn in flat? The side seams are also clean and neat.

OK, I found the answer to my question. Peter's Male Pattern Boldness had the Method in his shirt sew along. Why don't women's shirt instructions do this? It is so clean and nice. Thanks Peter

I have this question too. RTW shirts use this technique. Why don't women's patterns?

Thanks for posting the link to Peter's sew-along, Kathy.

It is a flat-felled seam. The shoulder seam is too, but is wider. You can use a flat-felled pressed foot, but I usually have better luck off set setting the pieces and pressing before turning and stitching. I use it for my boys' shirts.

You can do it on any shirt or any seam you want to. The beauty of sewing your own garments is that you are the designer. Pattern instructions are just instructions to complete a garment the way it is pictured. You can change it any way you want.

It's not a look I would want on my blouses, but to each his own. :)

I use flat felled seams for the sleeves sewn in flat. French seams for the side/sleeve seams. I don't have a flat felled foot. Like Annette, I just press the seam allowances before stitching.

I probably have too many sewing machines, but how am I supposed to resist when they're either free by the side of the road or people give them to me?

Thanks for finding and posting the great link. I'm adding this tag to your thread:

shirtconstructionthread

TgmandKitty requested a search category for shirt construction techniques in our discussion in the Miscellaneous section Message Searches, Bumping Threads thread. It is a pinned topic at the top of the Misc. section. The made up word that has been added above will lead to other threads on shirt construction if you apply it to the message board search function as the word being searched (search messages, leave name of poster blank).
