Does anyone here have a pattern for a Buddhist layman's robe? I did find one online, but it's just sketched out and hand written. Beyond the skills of this beginner!

I am not sure what this robe looks like, and it didn't come up in a google. If you could post a picture of one that might help. Folkwear Patterns has quite a few Asian styled patterns.

I don't know if that helps.

Thanks for your suggestions The patterns for the kimonos could be used because a kimono is worn under the robe. Here's where you can see one: zabuzabu.net. It's the lay robe for $180. I have talked to the owner of the company about having one made before I thought about making my own. Guess I could ask for the pattern, but don't know if she'd share it.
Here's a pdf I found of a pattern that looks close to the robe I want: http://www.kwanumzen.org/wp-content/uploads/bowing-robe.pdf
It looks much more advanced than I am right now. Its not a pattern I can just lay out, cut the fabric and sew Maybe in a couple of years....

The type of robe depends on the type of Buddhism practiced. I am familiar with the Soto Zen garments and got my instructions on line from the San Francisco Zen Center. They are no longer available on line, but you can buy a 40 page booklet from the center for about 17$. Look under "Teachings" for the information. It is especially important to read and reread the instructions on measuring until you understand how to fashion the Okesa to your measurements. Finally, in the Zen tradition, the teacher tells the student when they should begin sewing his/her lay or priestly vestments. It should be undertaken with great seriousness.

Thanks, Kathy. I am of the Soto Zen tradition. I have received permission from my teacher to begin my Kesa which is all hand sewn. I can use a machine for the robe. I know the book you're referring to. Just talked to a member of my sangha and he's sending me a pattern which is probably from the book. Think I'll have to spend quite a bit of time looking at it to really get the concept and see how to apply it. However much time it takes isn't important. Thanks again for your input. 🙏
