Once again I am on a quest for swimwear. I have purchased and returned 2 now because I have an E-cup and they just don't offer enough support. Why is this so hard to buy?

I found This Blouson Style and thought that if I could find a pattern, I could possibly learn to make a more supportive underbra and better straps. I like the blouson because it hides some of those lovely extra rolls I have.

Any suggestions?

No suggestions, but that sure is a cute swimsuit!

Don't know about a supportive swimsuit but many of the bigger breasted women at the pool where I swim wear old bras under their swimsuits.

I had a swimsuit in that style a few years ago, and the built-in bra and general coverage were definitely better than most RTW suits. I think it's a good style to try to adapt.

Maybe I will learn something at PR weekend that will help with bra construction in a swimsuit. I am certainly going to ask.

I am going to need good instructions on the shelf bra. It needs cups or shaping. I ordered a top from Simply Be to see if I can learn anything from that.

At bramakers supply the princess tankini ? I know that there is a good interior part for cups.

You might consider using Kwik Sew 2868 and both lengthening (a LOT) and widening the torso, and it has shelf bra instructions. Unfortunately that one only goes up to XL - way too small for me! YMMV.

So I looked at Butterick 5795. It's a different style - with princess seaming, but it does have info on sewing in bra cups, and the sizing is larger. To change the princess style top into a blouson, you'd want to remove all the waist shaping on the entire bodice - all darts, all in-curving to the waist, everything! - because blouson tops fall straight from the apex of the bust down to the high hip on the less fluffy ladies, and depending on your shape (if your hip is larger than your bust, or if you are apple-shaped, or if you have a full abdomen, or a combo of these) you may need to add 2 to 6 inches of ease to the waist-to-hip area (depends on yer fluffiness), plus you'll need to lengthen the torso to get the drape looking right. Fortunately princess seams make this much easier.

As I said in another post just today, "If you are busty or deeper in the front than in the back as most of us are (think of a side seam bisecting your body and measure your front and back separately - unfortunately pattern grading does NOT account for different depths of figures - it mostly just adds width....grrr), you'll wanna add more of the ease (i.e. spreading your slashes) to the front." Sorry to quote myself, but it is the SINGLE BEST PIECE OF INFORMATION I've ever gotten about plus size sewing. It is true of the less fluffy figures also as we all age, and I have often wondered why most sewists do not know it. Or if we do, we're not talking about it. :)

You could definitely make the straps narrower to look more like the SimplyBe, as well as attaching them differently: cutting the strap part off of the pattern pieces front and back, straightening the neck line across the front & back, then making a separate piece as a strap.

But now that I've written all this, I'm wondering if I'm repeating things you already know, so I'll stop.

One More Thing - you might also try this pattern...though it isn't sized for swimwear, but an OK jumping off point - Kwik Sew 2930
