Found this tip on a Blog--

Buy 1" wide masking tape and lay parallel strips along your square-cut fabric diagonally until it's full. Cut out the strips, leaving tape on until you are ready to use with your bias maker. Good way to have them ready and make others from scraps for future projects.

OH, get your own tape that's not taken to H's garage, as the cold/heat makes the tape sticky or not tear straight.

I use painter's blue tape and have my own personal stash.

I use painter's green tape in the studio for all kinds of things -- buy it in the bulk pack whenever it is on sale.

I also find using the tape helps reduce "stretching" on the bias when you are cutting.

2014
Fabric in stash at beginning of year: 143 yds
Fabric purchased: 113 yds
Fabric sewn: 72 yds
Fabric donated/disposed: 12 yds
Fabric currently in stash: 171 yds
10/1/14 New rule: 2 yards of fabric sewn/out for every 1 yard brought in
I've decided I'm going to reduce the stash by prioritizing the bulky items. That means the upcoming sewing projects will be fleece jackets.

What a great tip. I just made bias strips with slinky fabric. This would have stabilized the fabric and saved the world for some of the choice words floating around out there.

Oh what a smart tip. I have such trouble with cutting strips for bias tape. Thank you!

Does removing the tape cause stretching? Even the blue tapes I've used stick well enough for me to worry about that. I don't have an issue with stretching when I cut bias flat. I have had to be caution when cutting bias made by the tube method, since the fabric is not flat on the table while I cut.

This piqued my curiosity about the different tapes out there. Googling revealed some interesting information along with some new (to me) products such as Scotch Expressions colored masking tapes. While I love the bias strips tip, it's worth noting that the removability becomes less so over time. Scotch says 30 days (as long as it isn't exposed to direct sunlight). Original masking tape adhesive is rubber-based while that on painter's tape is acrylic. If you are ever on Jeopardy, be sure to read the history before you go!
