Has anyone noticed that Schmetz has started to color code their needles? Is this news to anyone besides me?

The following is from the Schmetz site:

"We are happy to announce color coding of SCHMETZ home sewing needles needle system 130/705 H. Needles have two bands of color. The top color band indicates needle type and the lower color band indicates needle size."

Now, when I stick needles in my pin cushion, I can identify them when I use them again. I printed out the chart from the website and put it on my bulletin board.

Schmetz Needles.

I think this is a great idea! Who can read the information etched into the shank? Not me.

Yes they started it last year. It's about time.
FYI if you have trouble seeing the info on the needle, use your phone camera to zoom in on it. It's better than a magnifying glass.

That is BRILLIANT! I was thankful my DD was home sick yesterday so she could read the needles for me!

Yay! Even under my large magnifier it's difficult to read those needles. PattyE, I will try the phone camera next time. I'll bet you're right because when I accidentally turn the camera to "selfie", I can see every wrinkle and pore - ugh!

Elaray, I have to apologize. When I learned that Schmetz was going to color code their needles I fired off an e-mail to everyone I knew who sews! That's how excited I was about this. I'm sorry you weren't in my address book.

The trick with the cell phone camera will be a godsend, not only for this but for a dozen other things that are tricky to see since my cataract surgery. Don't get me wrong - the surgery was the best thing that's happened to my eyesight in 53 years. But it changed my close up vision abilities markedly.

I have some still very good Singer sm needles (back from the 60's) and they were color coded. I just keep them now for remembrance of how inexpensive good product was or probably still can be!

Just FYI: not all phone cameras work with the zoom. I tried with the two I have without success.

Products being inexpensive is relative to wages...I was only making 50 cents an hour in the 60's...and that was as an office worker.

I actually have my pincushion labeled especially for my needles.each section for a different type and sizes written within each segment. I always know what is in the machine as I put a coloured head pin in that spot

It will be wonderful to be able to just stab a needle in anywhere .i can't wait till I can get some colour coded ones

If you have some that are not color coded, you can DIY with a sharpie before you take them completely out of their storage container. Make a swipe of the same color across the container so you will know what size and type the needle is once it has been removed and is being used again.

I printed out Schmetz's color coding chart and have it on the wall by my machines.
