I had an African Wax Print that my son wanted for curtains. It had an Ancient Egyptian themed pattern, and bright colors including some printed on gold. I don't know why but I pre washed it and the gold washed off. I am thinking that I could paint it back on, but I have no experience painting fabrics. Any suggestions for paint? I want the paint to be even with the surface of the fabric and to look smooth and moderately shiny.

Regular craft acrylic paints come in lots of lovely shades of metallic gold, and once dry, are permanent on fabric. I think they'd fit the bill nicely, without being fussy or requiring extra steps (heat setting, mixing with textile medium) that you don't really need for this project.
...And they're cheap. :)
Have fun! It's a shame this happened to the fabric, but painting it back on sounds like it might be fun! (Says the person who is about to paint grey hair into a wig...)

I highly recommend the "Lumiere" variety of metallic fabric paints. These are very metallic, flat (not puff) paints that are set with an iron. They hold up very well to wear and washing. I use a short, stiff brush to apply as the paint is a bit thick.
