My dd is in 6th grade and has PE this term. She does not want to change at school, but is finding the "skinny jean" style of her regular pants are too constrictive for PE. School dress code forbids form fitting/ legging style athletic wear pants, but I did manage to find her a pair of looser athletic pants at Target in a lightweight nylon spandex woven fabric. The fabric reminds me a little of the parachute pants fabric from the 80s, but with some stretch. Target only had them in one color and other pants I found online were too expensive for a growing child. If I could find a similar fabric I figure I could make her some adapting a pattern I already have. But I don't know what fabric to search for (other than nylon spandex) or where to buy online. Any help would be appreciated!

Perhaps you could get some swatches from Spandex House? I've bought from them before and they have a strange checkout system where they call you to get payment info, but other than that, I've been very pleased. Here's the link to nylon spandex at spandex house

No help with fabric......

I can't help but wonder why your daughter does not want to change for PE. Our adult son also did not want to change for PE when he was in the 6th grade. He initially did not tell us and started to wear his PE shorts under his school uniform pants. When the teacher told him he could not wear his shorts under his pants he told us what was going on.

The female teacher stayed in the classroom, facing the boys, when they changed for PE. Our son decided it was wrong and made him uncomfortable and came up with his solution. He said the teacher did not object until five more boys started wearing their shorts under their pants.

I spoke with the female teacher who said her presence was necessary to keep the boys from acting up. I let her know that her solution was unacceptable. We told our son to continue with his plan while we pursued this up the ladder.

Next, I went to the female principal at the Catholic school. She did not see the problem. By then, hubbie, big brother and I were outraged. Had it been a male teacher and female students, it would never have been allowed. We had a family meeting and told our son to persist with his solution and that we were all behind him; he was not to worry about 'getting in trouble' for wearing shorts under his uniform pants.

I worked in the church office and volunteered at the church (youth group, financial board, etc.). Could have gone to the pastor first but 'played nice' and gave everyone a chance to come to their senses. The pastor was appalled when I told him what was going on and the situation was immediately corrected.
.............
Writing this has given me time to think more about your daughter. I was terribly shy about changing without privacy. Your solution is a good one. Also wondering if modest 'boy short' type underwear and a camisole would help your daughter be comfortable in a situation where she is required to change in a group.

I can't believe your son's school didn't realize 6th grade boys may not feel comfortable changing clothes in front of a teacher of the opposite gender and that it wasn't appropriate at that age!

I think modesty has something to do with dd not wanting to change clothes at school, as her body has started changing and she is still getting used to it, but I think the main reason is that the other girls aren't changing their clothes either--it's such a conforming age! Have been through this with her older brother who wore his baggy gym shorts under slim pants (not a great look) as that was what the other boys did. I don't think my dd could fit shorts under her pants....

When I was in school, dressing out for P.E. was mandatory and we wore horrible uniforms in junior high--I hated wearing uniforms but it would be easier if her school just made changing for gym mandatory instead of optional (with religious exemptions as needed of course).

I like your suggestion of more modest underwear; she may them for Girl Scout camping and other times where she has to change in a group.

Is it changing in front of people, or is it that they don't have time to shower/change before and after class? I mean, I know there were days we all wanted showers, those often corresponded with the days when we had the least time.

I hate changing in front of people and still do. I always go into a bathroom stall to change. Does she have time to change in a restroom before going to gym??
