Subject: Disintegrating thread spools? SOLVED : Avoid Singer Fusion Threads Date: 3/12/14 3:59 PM

Is thread considered a notion? Sorry, I didn't know where else to put this! I noticed that some of my thread spools are disintegrating. I don't know how else to describe it! I put some on my machine and the ends of the spool just sort of fell away. I picked another one up and it crumbled in my hand. It feels like the are made of of sugar! They are all Gutermann, all with the metal ends, all in the same plastic spool holder, and all giving off a weird musty smell. Every metal-ended gutermann in this holder has been affected.
Any ideas on what is causing this? Has this happened to anyone else? Should I just throw that spool holder away?

I put more info on it here

weird, never seen such a thing. I have some singer thread that is in spools that look similar, my Guterman thread doesn't have the little metal cap.

There are actually one or two Singer threads in there, also with the metal cap, and also crumbling. Probably made by the same company at the time or something, they do look very similar.

I'd be curious where they are stored and what chemicals may be near by. Many plastics are susceptible to the most seemingly innocuous things.

I just showed my kids, the other day, how even thick polycarbonate would "melt" in your hand when exposed to a little acetone.

ETA: At work we see tons of plumbing failures due to the chemicals that people store under their sinks...same kind of story.

They are just in the plastic thread box (top always off) near my sewing machine, no chemicals or cleaning supplies in the same room even. Makes me wonder what I am inhaling now though O_o I think it's time to empty and clean the whole area!

I would contact the company and also the store where you purchased the thread. Something is very wrong.
Let us know if you resolve this. Good luck.

Whoa! I've got Gutermanns so old they say W. Germany on them and still they're utterly fine. I've never seen any spools with metal on them though - is that a weird Americsn import thing?

It is the composite of the metal the company used when the thread was manufactured.

Complain to Gutermann. And yes, thread is a notion; a sewing staple.

Now that I've noticed some of them are Singer Fusion threads, I did a quick search and came up with quite a few other people that had the same problem. At least I know my house isn't toxic!

If they are giving off a musty smell, as you say, that is an indication of too much moisture and not drying out. Storing thread in damp conditions can do that to thread, and sun exposure can dry out thread and make it brittle. Do you run a humidifier by any chance?
