Simplicity 1431 looks like it will flatter a plus size figure. New this spring '14. Princess seams. dress, tunic, pants, skirt, various sleeves for tops and dress, skirt has 6 gores for nice flare. I will be doing up the skirt first. Pants and skirt have twill tape waist finish.

That is a nice pattern. I question the pants. They make the model look big so for sure would not be a friend to a plus size.

I dislike the pants as well. And while the top and skirt may be comfortable (which I think they would be), I don't necessarily think they would be extremely flattering on many plus size women. They may create a bottom-heavy look, especially if the short-sleeved top is chosen and/or the fabric isn't softly draping in the skirt.

I actually think Simplicity 1430 would be more flattering on many plus-size women...however, it only goes up to a size 22.

Just a reminder...Burda released 10 new plus-size patterns recently, and I think most of them are pretty nice, myself (as well as not screaming "plus size!" in the design). There aren't any skirts but there are some nice dresses, as well as jackets, pants and tops.

I can't say for sure... but I think Simplicity used a plus sized model for that photo. She is proportioned well. I'm 5'8" and sew a size 16~18 in knits/20 in wovens. Past experience with princess seams has proven flattering for me.... with the right fabrics. Thank you for your post.

Thank you for your post. I think being tall and plus size is the key to pulling off the looks of this pattern. Princess seams have always been flattering for me.

I agree that princess seams could be flattering!

I think it's the neckline on Simplicity 1431 that bothers me, that and the length, especially with a skirt that's fuller at the bottom.. It's not so bad in the 3/4 sleeve tunic over pants.

If it was me, personally, I'd look at an alternative, though, such as cutting off McCall's 6920 to make a top more fitted/flared.

There's also McCall's 6896 top, which goes to size 24.

I think I look at the pieces as seperates more than a whole look. Skirt is cut out, and hopefully will be done by early next week. If I can find my camera I'll post a pic w/ a review.
