I see a lot of sites that sell fabric online, but where do you get buttons? Do some of these sites also have buttons, but not a really obvious way to find them? Not looking for anything exotic here, just washable buttons for use on blouses, shirts, jackets, etc.

Second vote to check out Wawak or Cleaner's Supply (they're sister companies).

Pam at Fashion Sewing Supply sells wonderful shirt buttons - plastic, pearl, wood, coconut, and my new favorite 9/16" metal shirt buttons.FSS Buttons

I've bought the "scoops" of buttons from FSS and they have been great for men's shirts at a great price.

@the original poster: There is someplace that will match buttons for you if you send them a swatch of fabric, but I don't remember who it is. Sawyer Brook? Vogue? I don't know, I'm guessing, but someone will know. :)

Buttons are tricky. Sometimes the price on them is great, but if you stock up and can't ever use them, you have just tossed money away. Unless you really like to look at pretty buttons. guilty

ETA: Sawyer Brook! Sawyer Brook matching service

I'm sure there are other places that do this.

You can often find a blouse, dress, or man's shirt in a thrift store than gives you 8-10 pretty buttons for less than a fabric store. I found an expensive brand shirt for $2 that was too small but had a dozen beautiful coral buttons. Special wood, metal, or bone ones have gotten pricey, so Vintage clothing is the place to look.

For ordinary mens shirt buttons I go to thrift stores and garage sales and buy used shirts.

For most other buttons, I've been shopping on Ebay recently. I bought lots of colorful large plastic buttons before Christmas to use on gifts, and lately I've been on a czech glass button binge for garments.

I buy buttons from Farmhouse Fabrics and Sawyer Brook--both, if I remember correctly, have vintage buttons that are less expensive.

I ordered lovely buttons for my coat for the PR coat contest last year from Fabric.com. After my neighbor from hell stole my mis-delivered UPS package (actually two packages), Fabric.com did not have enough buttons in stock to completely replace those from my order . I contacted the button manufacturer through Buttonlovers.com and was able to purchase the remaining matching buttons for my project. They have a minimum purchase of three cards, but they have a great selection of buttons, were so helpful, and I recommend them to anyone needing those special buttons to put the finishing touches on their project. Unfortunately, I was unable to finish my project in time for contest, but I now have a great fitting coat that I love!
