Subject: Old Stretch & Sew pant patterns Date: 4/4/14 5:27 PM

Hi~~ My mom wants to dig out her old S&S patterns to make some pull-up pants. She says that back in the day she used a poly blend with the width stretching from 10" to 12".

What would today's choice be? I referred her to Emma One Sock's RPL, but don't know what else she could use?

Anyone out there familiar with Stretch & Sew?

PS- I tried to convince her to get StyleArc's Linda to no avail...

What about ponte - rayon/poly/lycra knit? There are also some stretch cotton sateens and denims that could work, too.

What Karla said, and I noticed Fabric Mart had some ponte that was a poly lycra blend with no rayon....and update of the good old days.
btw S&S patterns are the best, I have at least 50 in my stash

Thanks for your replies. So then, would any stretch woven work as long as it stretched from 10" to 12"? Wouldn't that be about 20% stretch? (Is my math off?)

I appreciate your help with this. My mom is very down about her figure and I want to help her find the right material so she can make something that fits and have a "win".

The glory (well, one of the glories) of S&S patterns is that, because of the impeccable drafting, you can go up a size (or trace between two sizes) to use a stretch woven or a knit with less than the recommended stretch, and you'll still wind up with pants that fit.

S&S patterns are fantastic, so I can't blame her for wanting to stick with something she's been happy with, but I can personally vouch for the SA Linda pants, as well as several of the Jalies.
This one is designed for non-stretch fabrics, and might open up a world or possibilities for your mother.

The back of the pattern will tell you what stretch the knit should have.
If you find a fabric with 25 % stretch you'll be OK, maybe have to tweak. If you find a fabric with 50% stretch go down a size. Most pontes are around 20-25%. The basic pant pattern doesn't have alot of ease, so go by true measurements.
If you have your mom's old tracing in the envelope you can see what alterations she might have made in the pattern. S&S was drafted for a shorter height than most, about 5' 4". I sometimes have to add length in the legs.
