I like to buy my zippers 'by the yard' and I have several yards currently, but this questions comes to mind every time I make pants. What size zipper is the best to use? I know that jean zippers are typically a 4.5 or 5, but for lighter weight pants - should I still use a 5? I have some #3 zippers but not sure if those will work?

I'd be interested in any input someone might have. the zippers you buy in specific lengths at the store don't tell you what size they are. The #5 zippers seem like they would work, but the pulls seem really big. I wonder if you can get a smaller 'pull' for that size?

thanks!

I've used #3 nylon zippers in dress pants successfully. I typically reserve my brass #5 zippers for jeans or pants made out of a heavier fabric, and those are usually a more casual style so the metal and larger zipper pulls work fine.

Is it just me or do all of the zipper sellers only list jean zippers and dress zippers? I can't say that I've ever seen - pants' zippers and when I search -they don't come up..... I can't be the only one looking for them or wondering what the best type is. (from a size standpoint)

thanks for the response. I have a #3. I guess I'll use that.

For pants I use a regular zipper, the same type I use on skirts and dresses.

A size 5 is kind of heavy for light weight pants.
