Anyone here tried making their own bras? I am so sick of the not-quite-right fit of bras, I'm on the verge of trying to make one myself but I'm sort of worried about how difficult it might be.

Search the message boards and you'll find at least two current threads on bra making packed with great info!

I joined the bra sew a long last year and learned a lot. I haven't seen one for this year but I am going to start my first bra in the next week or so. If you want to sew along with me, I'm game. I ordered everything and the last arrived a few days ago. I am going to follow Ann St Clair's book- Intimately Yours: The Bra That Fits.

I made one bra several years ago and it was the best fitting bra ever. I looked at it the other day, and mine definitely looked home made. Meaning, I could have done better stitching, but back than I was so determined to finish stuff, I just didn't take my time (like I do now -that I'm back into sewing big time). Now I have a drawer full off bra's where I maybe wear 3 because the others don't fit well. I would have considered my sewing skills to be beginner, maybe advanced/beginner.

I never got time again after that to sew and just started seriously sewing again and getting ready to make bra's again.

That is correct, there are threads here with bra's. They are also some very detailed tutorials out there where you get a good visual on how it all comes together.

Here is my advise, read the reviews on which bra pattern to get. Specially if you can find someone that wears your size. They have reviews on the Kwik Sew patterns (one is out of print but you can still get from Kwik sew as a download), Pin up girls, and Elan.
I had made the elan and thought it was great, but understand they suppose to be better directions out there per reviews (like I said, rushed thru the process and now see my crappy stitching). And I will know that when I make one of my other patterns (if they are truly better).
Use the correct bra material because material makes a huge difference in fit. Once you know what you are doing, you can start using other material (that's where I want to get too). Be careful, the underwire size you will need is not the RTW size, so looked that up before you order.
I'm not sure what country you are in, but there are several resources that specialize in bra material. They all have a kit you can get to make sure you have everything you need to make your first one. For example, Sew Sassy has a kit and the pattern that goes with it you can purchase. If you are in Canada, Bramakers supply (you can order for the US too).

Some of those threads are so long, I just don't have the time to read thru all that. I won't have time left to sew! But reading the reviews are definitely worth it, plus you see how nice they can be, even home made (since they don't look it at all when done right).

hope that helps! and go for it!

I think I will be joining the bra making bandwagon this summer, after school is out. I hate trying on bras and maybe I can actually make one that fits and looks pretty!

Sandi, I would totally take you up on that, but the next month or two are going to be crazy ... My daughter and her husband are being stationed a few hours away in mid-May, we are having her baby shower in two weeks, and then when the baby is born, I will be spending time with them for a week to help out. So a sew along probably isn't a great idea for me right now. But please keep me posted on how your sewing goes; I really think this is something I want to try, but it makes me nervous. It seems so advanced! LOL

Ok, things may slow down for me by the end of June. I am committed to a few other Sew Alongs right now.
Lets try to get another Bra Sew Along started this year.

PM me when you are ready. Even waiting until Fall will work- my grandson will be here all of Aug.

It is definitely on my to-do list, I have bought a Jalie pattern, but I think at best it will be a sleep bra as it doesn't look to have enough support for me.

There are some good recent posts about bra making on the sewaholic blog, quite a few good tips there...

I purchased Demystifying Bra Fitting and Construction from Norma Loehr. I'm not know for reading non-fiction very well and I've been surprised at how easily I understand the writers concepts. I have yet to put this theory into practice, but in looking at the reviews, the book is very well reviewed.
