As part of an article I'm writing/translating on custom patterns, I needed to understand how a particular pattern "worked." So I built myself a paper mache dressform. And I found out it's quite liberating being able to just drive those pins straight into the form and have them keep the pattern pieces exactly in place.

The problem is-- the form I made roughly corresponds to a human torso, just not my measurements, or anyone else's in my circle. (Given that the pattern was custom, it was a simple matter to measure the form and make the pattern to suit.)

so, what are my options for getting a form that

a) corresponds to real, not idealized measurements.
b) acts a giant pin cushion.

Check out paper tape dress forms and duct tape doubles. A search here and on Google will give you a lot of info. I made the duct tape version and can only pin into the cloth cover I made. The duct tape makes the pins sticky. I will be interested to see feedback from people who made the paper tape double.

That was my #1 consideration when looking for a dressform. To me, what good was it going to be if I couldn't pin to it?
I ended up going with a PGM...nice linen cover and you can pin to it all over. I could also add fluff when/where needed.
There are custom dressform systems that will mimic your body exactly.
