I think you were given you a ton o suggestions here.

How much do you want to spend? The Pfaff Select 4.2 you were asking about would cover all the bases. Under $500, look at the Janome HD3000 or DC4030P. Ooops, the 4030 might give you an error message if you're doing something wrong, scratch that.

Janome makes the best basic home machine mechanicals. Juki makes the best home straight stitcher. Purely my uneducated opinion.

If you have decided on a fuss no muss easy to use machine, which brand and model is it ?

Please visit different sewing machine dealers and try out some of the sewing machine brands and models in the price range you can afford.Try out a mechanical Bernina 1008 too !

Take plenty of the fabric scraps along you will be using most of the time, including knit and silk fabric,or other not always easy to sew fabrics. And don't forget to sew a few buttonholes too !

Last year I visited a Pfaff dealer and looked at the Pfaff select 150 limited edition sewing machine. It had a metal bed,a lot of people don't like all plastic sewing machines. It had the IDT and was around 500 dollars in my neck of the woods. It reminded me a lot of the well known old Pfaff 1222 models with IDT. The Pfaff 150th Anniversary expression model is a computer sewing machine.

Your questions remind me of buying a car.Would you buy a car without test driving cars more than once ? A neighbor thinks her car is the best car around because it has air conditioning and my car doesn't,I don't need air conditioning.I don't like to drive her car,I can't see the front end.

If you would tell us what you plan on sewing most of the time,it would help a lot.If you only like to quilt, there are sewing machines for quilters. If you only want to sew denim, canvas or leather, there are sewing machines that can handle that too.It takes time to try out different sewing machines. As you have noticed, every person likes his or her different brand and model sewing machine.

Please visit different dealers, then narrow down the models you like best and read sewing machine reviews online, then buy the machine you like best !

A Buyer's Guide to Your First Sewing Machine.

Everyone has a budget and recognizing whether or not you can actually afford the machine that you want is the first step to choosing the one that's right for you. There is simply no point in looking at high-end machines if you have a limited budget. That way lies disaster. So decide on a budget and stick to it,recognizing that there will always be a machine that offers so much more if you just spend just a little bit extra.

The Janome HD1000 @ $300 is a basic mechanical w/ metal casing and last time I looked, has a 1 amp motor (for whatever that is worth) but the one I had was very capable over heavy stuff and produced a perfect stitch. BabyLock BL-9 is similar in function and cost. The HD3000 is totally different but very nice also with a few additional assists for $50 more. 1008 is wonderful also ($1100) but the Bernina 215 is also nice and considerably less than the 1008. Those are about the only choices in new, no-fuss mechanicals that i would recommend for a primary-use machine. If your price-point is under $600 you're back to a nice Janome, the BL-9 or possibly the Bernina 215.

I prefer my Janome HD3000. You might want to think about an older mechanical. None of the new machines compare to those.

Just go to as many dealers as you can find and test drive their mechanicals.

Everyone has their favorite and it may not be the one that becomes your favorite.

Once you have the machine and have used it for a few months, then write a review. Too many owners do reviews before the lube gets warm.

Have you actually gone and looked at/tested any machines? Really why spend so much time reading when what one loves may be completely incompatible with what you want - the car example is excellent. I would go for a Pfaff or a Bernina 1008 but the latter is well out of your price range and doesn't have adjustable pressure. But what I'd pick doesn't matter, it may not do what you want it to do. You could get a lot of hands on experience and feel for the machines in the time it takes to read all the answers to all the queries posted about different machnes!
