Hi, I read that the difference between the 603 Touch and Sew and the 603E is that the 603E can do chain stitching and the 603 can't, but have also seen posts stating the 603 can chainstitch, so figured I'd ask the experts. :-) I have a 603 coming to live with me soon and was wondering about this. I have the chain stitching attachments (got them in a box of goodies) so am hoping to use them. TIA

My vote, is it will work for you. As long as you got the right chain stitch plate, and bobbin case cover, and little thread guide. I think the difference is just how the bobbin gets wound. With a flippy lock under the stitch plate v.s. a control on the machine bed in front of side pillar. Can't see how that would make any difference in actual Chain stitching though. But, since the bobbins are all the same, a bobbin case cover that fits in one, would fit in the other one too,

Thank you! I have the machine now and do have the three chain stitch pieces so I am hoping to try it out tonight or tomorrow. :-)

Well the 603 does gorgeous deco stitches. I had a 401 that used the same black cams and never was satisfied with the stitches (I know I'm weird but I have never met a 401 I could bond with) but they are just lovely on this machine. As for the chainstitching, yes it will work, but I'm having some trouble with it. I can do a beautiful chainstitch for about 6 inches or so if I go slow, but then I will get a big thread jam and a huge mess of stitches under the plate. After trying various tensions, needles, and thread, I think it may be the needle plate. I don't have another to compare it to, but going by the pics I could find online, I think the little swinging bar under the plate may be slightly bent. From the pictures It looks like the bar and the flat bar underneath it run straight together but the top bar on mine ( the thicker one) has a bit of a curve to it. Going to put it aside for now, until I get another needle plate to try, in case that is the problem. Am still loving this machine for its lovely stitches though so its definitely a keeper. :-)

I have a Singer 611 that I use for chainstitch basting, just not recently. I got a manual for it from T&Trepair. Take a look at their site, it might help. http://www.tandtrepair.com/

I actually do have the printed chainstitch instructons already (but thank you for kindly posting that sight), and I have set everything up as instructed. It will sew a chain stitch but then suddenly get nested after a few inches. It sews beautifully otherwise. :-)

It was the needle plate after all. Ordered a new one and could see right away the little bar underneath was in much better shape. Set everything up for chainstitch and it worked just fine. Yay!
