Both of these are entry level embroidery machines--and about what I would want/need for my embroidery desires. I know there are comparable Brother machines but want to get from a local dealer.

I don't have them, but I would vote for the Baby Lock.... touch screen (monochrome though it is), push button thread cutter, and one touch, one finger needle threader that works the first time. .. those are important things to me... You may prefer one or the other based on what hoop sizes are available or what software it may come with if any... I've heard numerous complaints about a very limited hoop size on the Brother clone of that Baby Lock, and not just online, but also from people who owned the machine at a quilt retreat I attended. But you said limited embroidery so it may be OK for you!

Does anyone know who makes the Chicago 7 for Bernina?

I just donated my BL Sofia 2 to our ASG Chapter. We use them for demonstrations at membership drives, events, at meetings and to teach youth during our summer sewing camp.

I had the Sofia 2 and the embroidery was fantastic. Perfect every time and easy to use. I loved that machine and wish I had never sold it. I have the Emore now, which I also love and which stitches just as well, but I still miss that little Sofia and wish I had kept it as a back up.

When I got my Janome 350e I was told the Bernette Deco was the same. I chose the Janome because I was told the Deco used proprietary Bernina file types.

Don't know if it is true but before you commit to a Bernette that embroiders you should check that out.

The BL uses a PES which means any 3rd party, free and mainstream software can open, edit and output it to the Sofia 2.

If the Chicago 7 uses proprietary Bernina file types you have limited and generally pricier software choices.

I have the Sofia 2 and have love it. I have heard many Bernina dealers don't like the Chicago 7.

Thanks for all the super comments! I also hear the Sofia is a good all around machine. The Bernette has slightly larger embroidery capability and a bigger price tag.

I've worked on both. I think the comment that B dealers are less enamored with the Chicago is because it's a Bernette, not a Bernina, but I think it sews and embroiders as well as the Sophia. The hoop is bigger, you're not limited to a small 4x4 though oddly it's not 5x7 either. It does not use some proprietary format so design restriction shouldn't be a worry. Compare the editing capability of the two, it may be more limited than the Sophia, a tradeoff for size I guess. And speaking of size, if you're going to use it as a sewing machine as well, it's a standard size machine, more space. I like the cute compactness of the Sophia and Brother counterpart but they are definitely small machines.

I really think you have to go see each in person and have it demonstrated and try sewing on them yourself with what you will want to sew to see what you think.

The Chicago uses exp. format. I think easy to get designs. Also I would think that a person could download free Artlink 6 and edit and convert other formats to exp. and load on a usb stick. Best to check out each machine and buy what suits best.

I bought my Sofia 2 maybe 18 months ago, I love it but I wish someone would have told me to go bigger. The hoop is so small. I am now going back for a Spirit. I will keep my Sofia for my sewing. I love my Baby Lock.
, I also bought me a Baby Lock Imagine serger.
