Lately, I've been intrigued by the presence of stiff interfacing and fusible vinyl. Today, I bought some of each (and some other supplies - not including the cat) and, based on some blogs around the net, drafted my own pattern.

I finished it just a few minutes ago. It isn't perfect, by any means, by it's cute! And lined!

I made a second one, for a friend, today. Same fabric, but I added a charm to hers.

Your bags are adorable... great job on them...

How was it working with the fusible vinyl... do tell.

Working with the vinyl was easy.

One challenge, for me at least, was in making sure the fabric didn't have any fur on it (four cats let me live with them). The owl fabric is a cotton twill and cat fur clung to it; I know there's at least one strand of fur under the vinyl!

Another issue I had cropped up when I applied the vinyl to an uneven surface - I fused the twill to heavy interfacing before fusing the vinyl to the twill. Where the interfacing stopped, there was a small air gap between the vinyl and the fabric.

Tonight, I played around with leftover twill and vinyl. I used small pieces of the vinyl to cover a couple of small patches of twill. I was curious to see how piecing the vinyl would look. It looks fine; there's a visible mark where the vinyl is overlapped, but you'd need to know you were looking for it to see it.

I used those patches to make a couple of small books, so tomorrow we'll see the result of that experiment. Right now, the books are under weights to press them flat.

The directions for the vinyl said to use a smooth surface to apply the vinyl. I'm not sure, but I think the very slight texture of my ironing board is reflected in the vinyl's texture! My board isn't pitted or gouged, it just has some sort of a teflon-ish/canvas covering. Weird. Oh, the vinyl is a little... Not sticky or tacky, but... Um... 'Grippy'? once on the fabric. Maybe that's the nature of vinyl.

Also, on my purse - the bamboo/round handled one - I think I handled the vinyl fabric too much; by the time I finished hand-sewing the handles on, the edges of the vinyl where I was working were starting to lift. In some areas, I was able to re-melt the vinyl; in others, though, the curve of the purse handle kept me from doing that.

Its something I would use again. Huh. I suppose I should do a notions review.

Tomorrow, I'll get on that.

I have some of that fusible vinyl in my stash I purchased a while back and never used it.
