Hi there, I am the owner of a 580 and 780 machine. I purchased the 780 when it was first released because of the dual feed and larger harp size. Unfortunately I have not had many opportunities to use the machine due to0 it living mainly with my dealer. It has the common problem (with these machines) of not sewing an acceptable straight stitch. Even Bernina Australia have now agreed that the machine has had all the best technical attention and acknowledge that it doesnt meet "my" standards. My only option now is to pay the extra for an 830 or 880 machine. My dealer didnt want to sell me an 830 when I bought the 780 due to the problems his customers were having with, many traded their 8 series machine for a 7 series one. My dealer said he decided to not bring in any 880 machines so I am unable to test drive one. I was wondering if anyone out there owns an 880 machine or has test driven one. Also what is the current opinion with the 830 machines. From my reading it seemed that an update caused some peoples machines to become noisey. At the time I purchased the 780, I chose it over the TOL husqvarna because of it quietness. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks.

I was prepared to buy a 780 when they first came out but decided against it after I did some testing on it (stitching was horrible). It was my understanding that they fix the machine. I did a test drive on the 880 and it seemed to sew ok however if I buy a Bernina it will be a 580 - for the price it seemed to stitch better to me on some of the stitches than the 780 and the 880.

I had an 830 and never had a problem. I upgraded to the 880 after attending Sewapolooza. I love the 880 even more. I have a wonderful dealer and haven't had a problem with functionality or stitch quality.

Have you looked into the 880 yahoo group? Overwhelmingly the comments are extremely positive. The new 830s seem to be relatively trouble free as well. It would appear that Bernina has worked out the bugs of the 8-series.

Here's a quote I copied out of another thread on the Berninas:

... "I've had the B880 since last October and have not had any problems. Mine stitches beautifully. I know there were some problems with some of the 830's, especially the earlier ones, but lots of owners have loved them. There is a yahoo group for the 830 and also one for the 880. If you join both of those groups you can ask questions from lots of 830 and 880 owners. I have noticed that on the 830 group, there are some frustrated owners; but most seem really happy with their machines. On the 880 group, there just hasn't seemed to be any serious problems. I'm suspecting that whatever was changed between the 830 and the 880 made the 880 model a little more stable. But I don't really know and have never owned the 830, so I can't really compare. HTH!"

Subject: Bernina 880 Date: 10/3/15 11:35 AM

I had the 830 and had a lot of issues, most perhaps due to the enormous learning curve. When I heard the 880 was coming out, with many of the difficulties of the 830 resolved, I got one. I have had more trouble with the 880 than with the 830. I've had several intensive instructional sessions with the dealer, and everything seems to be fine there; but once I get it home and try to embroider, I encounter problems--error messages about the bobbin, upper thread, inability to recognize that the hoop is installed...Machines, especially machines that cost so much, shouldn't be so finicky. I brought it back to the dealer for repair. They had it for 3 weeks. I got it back, and the same problems returned. I'm going to stick with my old Brother 4000D for embroidery. It stitches out perfectly every time and never complains.

Does it all work perfectly fine when you bring it into dealer after they've worked on it and you still have problems?

The dealer and I cannot figure out why I keep having problems. I brought the machine with me to an embroidery class the other day, and the dealer said that the problem may be resolved by using a thread conditioner (Sewers Aid), which I bought and used there. There were no problems at the class, but when I returned home, I kept getting the same error messages. The dealer is stumped, and I'm exasperated.

I have an 830 LE and have no problems with it - it's my favorite machine

That said, I know that many people DO have problems with the 830/880 models, and in my experience, it is almost always in the threading. These machines have a very particular way they like to be handled during the threading process. I've taught several user classes with the 830; people have come in complaining about problems with their machines, and once they learn correct threading the problems disappear in the vast majority of cases.

A couple things - when threading the upper thread, WAIT until the auto threader light goes on and all machine sounds have stopped before carrying the thread across the machine from the right to the left. When threading the bobbin, after you've put the bobbin in and the thread in the slit, be sure to pull out sufficient thread so that it seats itself properly before you cut it or thread for embroidery. I'm talking at least 18 - 24 inches. Also, when closing the bobbin door, don't bump the bobbin case - lift the door slightly, wait for the bobbin to turn to the inside, then shut the door.

You can go to YouTube and check out the Bernina Boys videos - that may help.

Best of luck with this - I know how frustrating problems like this can be.
