I thought momentarily about posting this in the vintage forum but I didn't want it to be pigeonholed. The NY Times special fashion magazine T has a wonderful article about Elizabeth Hawes, an iconoclastic designer and author that I had never heard of (and I spend many too many hours prowling through 1930s patterns and designers on the web.) Forgotten today, she worked in Paris, and started up her own line in NY in 1928. Described as a proponent of style but a critic of fashion, she advocated for comfortable clothes and cross dressing, and wrote books, one of which is called "Fashion is Spinach," an "ethnographic account of the fashion industry." It's a great piece, she sounds like a real kick, and I hope all those who read this will run over to the NYT website and read it. She sounds like she would have fit in perfectly today--or rather, that we have finally caught up with her.

Thanks for posting this mmcp.

And thank you Sarah for mentioning that it can be read online. I found this link here that seems to have it available in various formats:

Fashion is Spinach

Looking forward to reading it!

I read that book several years ago. Thank you for the link. I downloaded it to revisit.

I got Fashion Design Course from Amazon for Mothers Day. It's a good book too. It reminds me of Nick Verreos Nick's
blog

when he explains fashion. Tamara The Green Thimble

when she talks about fashion, her design books she keeps.

Raven Elyse you tube

Raven is at University of North Texas in their fashion design program. She does some great day trips into her school world. Just keep in mind she's a still a very young student doing normal things. I jump and skip to the school parts. I have wanted to give her a box of tissue and tell her good girl or she's doing the right thing, but I'm a stranger.

But I have enjoyed this book.

Cool, thanks mmcp for the lead and thanks Sanibelle for the link. I read a few pages online and then downloaded the epub version for my e-reader.
