Hi all!

My MIL has been looking to buy a serger but she isn't sure what to get. This is her first serger so ideally we'd like to get something as user-friendly as possible, but the babylocks with jet-air threading are way way out of our price range.Price-wise, the Brother 1034D is about right ($200 or so on Amazon). That's what I've got and she was thinking about getting the same one, except our local dealer doesn't carry it and she wants to buy from a dealer.

Can anyone think of a few sergers, new/used, that might fit in this price range? Thank you!

We have a forum topic for sergers seperate from sewing machines - that would be the best place to ask this!

That said - check out the Brother 1034D. Amazon has it, and so do other vendors - on a good day it is less than $200.

AMAZON for 1034D

I have had mine going on 9 years now and still love that it works just like it did when new and does the jobs I need done! there is an entire topic on the 1034D here and there are also other serger options at about this price point, such as a Janome I think.

Take a look at some of the sewing places. Sometimes they have some used ones that are very good. OR you could sell your serger to your MIL and you get a new one from amazon.
But I think Pfaff, Viking, Jerome, or Kenmore would be good choices.

I would be surprised if you can get a serger from a dealer for less than $200 unless they happen to have a used on in stock. Brother dealers sell several that are very similar (if not identical) to the 1034d. I might start there and see what they have. I know Hancock's sells the lower end Janomes in their stores (they are similar to the 1034) but they don't offer the support that a dealer offers.
