So my (retired) husband decided to build a small sailboat -- it's about rowboat size and can be used as a rowboat or sailboat. Guess who got elected to make the sails? Since I do have a Sailrite sewing machine I couldn't really say no. I'm working from a kit with all the pieces pre-cut and labeled and marked (thank goodness!). So far I don't think I've screwed up anything too badly. Anyone else venturing into territory you didn't expect?

I'm so glad you have an appropriate sewing machine. My ex used my Singer to make a sail and even though I took it for a tuneup as soon as he was done, it was never the same.

I sometimes sew parachutes for dh. They have to be able to handle large high power rocketry at shows. They are a pretty penny if you have to buy them.
My vintage mechanicals are waaayyy better at sewing tricky fabrics than my newer machine.

When I was little my mom reupholstered my fathers vintage MG in red Naugahyde using her mechanical Elna. It worked great for another decade before being taken down by a house fire. The older machines are something.

Territory I find unusual is clothing and lightweight stuff like that. I love heavy stuff like packs, bags, holsters, covers, tarps, canopies, gazebo roofs, and so on. I'd love to try doing auto upholstery!

And in case anyone is interested, here's a place you can buy #20 needles for your home machine, to sew with heavier thread.

The Wright brothers had relatives (women) sew their aircraft fabric!

My DH once propose buying a sailboat to use for early retirement. It had a treadle Sailright in the galley table. His thought was we could pull into a port and Icould pick up some work mending sails
We did not get the boat!!!!!!!!
