Stitch #38 Janome MC 6300P

I'm adding some decorative stitches to some pockets and I'm wondering if I should begin my stitches on a scrap fabric and then continue onto my pocket? I thought I remembered reading that recommendation in the past.

Forgive if this is a silly question, but do I need to worry about these stitches coming undone? Not sure if there is a proper way to do this or if I should just begin stitching on the edge of the fabric with decorative stitches.
