Subject: Altering the StyleArc Eliizabeth top pattern Date: 7/22/14 10:40 PM

I'm trying to alter StyleArc's Elizabeth top pattern, and am finding it much more challenging than I thought. Elizabeth The pattern I have is a size 20, but I'm actually 16/18 through the shoulders and chest, 22 at the bust and larger below. I've had to do a narrow shoulder adjustment to both left and right front pieces and FBAs to both pieces. However, it feels tight over the bust and the edges of the overlay and underlays don't hang right. I think it might be because the side of each piece that hangs free doesn't have the added fabric that the attached side with the added dart and FBA has. I hope you're still following me, here. It's hard to understand if you haven't seen the pattern pieces. Does anybody that's still with me have any thoughts?

If I'm following you correctly, you altered the base pieces of the top, but nothing was done to the overlay and you sewed up your tester.

If that is the case, I would say to first just do a sewn tester of only your base pieces and get that fit down to the way you want it. Then once you hit that point... back track to the overlay and do to it what you did with the base pieces. Or possibly even just draft a new overlay using your altered base pieces.

I'm with Catina on using the altered full piece to redo the overlay.

One of the things that could be causing the overlay to not hang right is that a dart was added from the fba to the base top. My instincts say you may need to either pull the overlay up or down at the shoulder seam to get the hang right. That will also affect the way it attaches at the neckline.

It's a really cute top and gives me an idea for a sheer burnout knit that I have. Thanks!!!!

Can you add the dart to the exterior piece (looking at the line drawing, the left side) and then close that dart to add the length you need to the right/open side?

(I don't know if that would work--it's just what I would try first!)

I made the same alterations to the overlay and the underlay. I hadn't thought of perfecting the underlay first, then translating that to the overlay. (Duh!) Good idea. I'll try pulling the piece up at the shoulder, too. That makes sense. The suggestion to add a dart to the edge of the overlay was what I was thinking of doing but wasn't sure how to do it. I think I'll try the first two options and then see what happens. Thanks, ladies.
