| | What KimSews likes about this machine I haven't seen too many reviews for this machine so I thought I would do my very first review and let everyone know what I think of machine.
This is my first serger. The machine was bought off of Ebay from a salvager. From what I could figure from addressing on box, it was bought from one of the internet sewing machine dealers, arrived damaged, returned, sent to the salvager, and then to me. The box it arrived in looked like it had been shipped through a war zone. It traveled the country more than I have! Of course I had to take it to my local dealer to get it repaired. Twice. The machine still didn't work properly so I took it to a different dealer that was recommended. They fixed it properly(thank you Milwaukee Sewing Machine!) and for less money. I'll never go back to the first dealer. EVER.....
Machine works like a dream now. I have used the 3 thread OL, the 4/3, the 5 thread safety stitch, cover stitch, rolled hem and the flat lock functions so far. Everything except the 2 thread functions. All work very well. Threading was pretty easy to figure out and the diagrams are printed on the machine also so you don't have to keep referencing the manual. Recommended tension and other setting are close to what you actually need, makes dialing in stitch a short process. I have used it to make slipcovers for my sofa and loveseat, carseat covers, blue jeans and a variety of knit tops. Handled it all well.
Machine is quiet and has suction cups on bottom that stick machine to table. It has a bin to hold fabric scraps. I bought the additional feet for the machine and have used the elasticator and the blind stitch foot. Both did their job well. I did get compliments on the quality of the stitches from the people who serviced the machine. All in all, Juki must make their machines well for mine to have survived what it went through and still stitch! What KimSews does not like about this machine Switching over to the coverstitch takes too long for me. It also is kind of touchy to deactivate the upper looper arm. You have to move the needles to their lowest position and push a lever to deactivate upper looper. No problem doing that. Its putting back thats the problem. Machine has to be the exact same part of the cycle to switch it back easily. If you force it (I did), you will throw upper looper out of time. Could be just my machine and all its been through, but I thought I would mention it. It also doesn't like to coverstitch over a seam easily with the all purpose foot it came with. Machine does come with separate special coverstitch foot, but mine was lost in its travels. It may solve that problem.
It is proving to be difficult to replace the missing foot for my machine. Dealer network is not good. I have no local dealer and the internet dealers I have emailed have shown no real interest in special ordering it for me. A local person to talk to would be nice.
I don't know why they are not more popular. This is a very nice machine all in all. From what I have read on the internet, Juki does manufacture some of the Bernina sergers also. You can see this if you compare pictures of them side by side. Some of the areas, like the knives and the front panel are very similar. And Juki feet fit on the Berninas. You get a good quality machine with out the high priced name.
Conclusion: Nice machine if you want to coverstitch occasionally. If I hadn't came across this bargain, I would have bought the Juki MO644de and a separate coverstitch machine. Not a knock against the 735, but I am using the coverstitch a lot and a separate machine would be a timesaver.

| Reader Comments | | Betakin | 2/26/08 | Thank you for your review. It is nice to know you are enjoying your serger after all it has been through and all of it's travels. I think I would name it Gulliver (Gulliver's Travels). Maybe you have already tried this, but since Juki makes Bernina sergers too, maybe try to get the foot you need from a Bernina dealer. I hope you and Gulliver enjoy your relationship for a long time to come. | | * * * | | runnerchicki | 2/27/08 | Great review! Despite all the trouble you had to go to with this machine, in the end you got a great serger at a super price! That machine usually costs around $1000! I recently bought the Bernina 1300MDC which is very similar to the Juki MO-735 (but more expensive), and if I'd have known about this machine before I made my purchase I definately would have considered it. If you are not able to find a replacement foot through a Juki dealer, you might check a Bernina dealer. The 1300 is built by Juki and the Bernina feet may fit your machine. | | * * * | | ladyEE | 2/27/08 | You can order the special coverstitch foot from any Bernina dealer. On the Bernina website there are pictures of many of their serger feet and short videos of them in action (under accessories or sergers) compare them to the feet you have now. I,too, heard that Juki makes Bernina sergers. good luck. | | * * * | | got2bjennyg | 2/27/08 | What a great buy! | | * * * | | KimSews | 2/27/08 | Thanks for your lovely comments. Gulliver sounds great, that'll be his name, Betakin. I will have to try a Bernina dealer for the foot, never did think of that. I knew that Juki feet worked on the Bernina, and it make sense that the reverse is true also. Did find another thing I don't like about my Juki today. It doesn't come with an alarm to warn me when I'm sewing shirts together backwards (which is what I just did). I could use a machine that would do that :) | | * * * | | rozzybabe | 3/12/08 | I've had a Juki serger, MO-654DE for 14 years, & it's NEVER been serviced! Although I don't use it as heavily now, it's had a HUGE workload & has performed brilliantly!! I just keep it cleaned & oiled properly, & so far haven't had any operational problems, although I'm sure machines well used should be professionaly serviced!! I'm just naughty. I agree, I don't know why this brand of serger doesn't get more limelight. If I was to buy a new machine, there'd be NO hesitation on my part- another Juki!! | | * * * | | Asetneferankh | 4/21/08 | Thanks for your note about the coverstitch. I was considering a machine with both, and I appreciate your comments. Now I am leaning towards separate machines. | | * * * | | BlackBeauty | 5/19/08 | I bought brother 2340 CV and I ma shopping around hoping to manage to find a JUki in Abu DHbai UAE.ONly MO-735 can do the safety stich isn't it ?
| | * * * | | appleanne22 | 6/4/08 | I enjoyed your review. I just received my Juki-735 on Monday and am anxious to try out everything. It seems that I read someplace that this machine, also, has the micro adjustment just as the Bernina 1300MDC. Is this true? And where is it on the machine? I went to my local Bernina dealer yesterday to compare machines and indeed they are almost identical, except of course, the Juki doesn't have the screen manual on it and the pressure foot doesn't turn out like the Bernina. I think I can live with that for the $500. savings! I can't wait to get sewing!!! | | * * * |
