Bio: I have a wonderful husband and 5 cats. I love to cook, make bread, garden and (now) sew. I'm still learning the basics, but am hoping to become proficient enough to sew most of my own clothes. full profile

What Melanie74 likes about this machine
This machine was a hand-me-down from my stepfather's mother. She bought it in 1962 and used it A LOT for 20some years then it sat untouched until 6 months ago. I decided to try my hand at sewing and didn't want to spend big $$$ on a machine without knowing if I would stick with it. I have stuck with it so far and the ease of this machine is a main reason!
It is a solidly constructed workhorse. I feel like there isn't anything it won't do for me, or let me do to it. It sews easily through single or multiple layers of thick and thin fabrics. I haven't yet broken a needle, even though I've thought I should have a few times! The drop in bobbin is the only type I've ever used, and is very convenient.
It has three needle positions.
It has adjustable stich width.
It has adjustable presser foot pressure.
It accomodates two needles.
It has "fashion discs", or what I see referred to on this site as cams, which allow for a good basic selection of decorative stitches.
I love that I can maintain it myself (so far).

What Melanie74 does not like about this machine
There's nothing about the machine I don't like.

sewfrequent3/19/08This is a slant-o-matic that I'm not familiar with but it sounds really great! I have a 500 that i truly love as well! I will keep an eye out for this particular one. Thank you for reviewing it!

got2bjennyg3/19/08Sewfrequent- the 328 is NOT part of the slant-o-matic series of machines (401, 403, 404, 500 503). It is a totally different animal.

mufffet3/19/08Sounds like you hit on a good machine for our purposes!

johnr553/23/08Aren't these old Singers a hoot! Just like American cars from that period--elaborately styled, just the opposite of the Euros. I'm glad you're enjoying it, and would like a followup on your experiences with it. Congratulations!

Pocket Venus5/13/08This sounds like a great machine. How wonderful to put 2 ordinary needles in it to do twin needle sewing!

saf475/29/08Melanie, I bought my first machine in 1968, and it was a 328k. It is a '67 model, so I bought it used for $97. I still have it, all the attachments, disks, and manual too, and wouldn't give it up for the world. I've had several since, and currently have a Singer 9920 which I adore, but if in doubt, I always pull out the old 328k. Like you, I don't think there is anything it won't sew. I'm glad you like this machine. Got2bjennyg, you are correct - this is not a slant-o-matic. It's a straight needle machine and sews rings around those mentioned in my opinion. The Singer salesman I bought it from told me there were issues with this model which is why it was traded in. I've yet to find them.
