What Superbabynurse likes about this machine
This machine was quiet and stitched evenly. Large number of pattern stitches.

What Superbabynurse does not like about this machine
It recently quit working...just one big clunk while I was sewing two pieces of cotton (quilting fabric) and would not make a stitch or pick up the bobbin thread. When I took it in to be repaired I was told it would be about $300 to repair it and he really questioned me on what I was sewing that would cause such damage. I know he did not believe me that it was very think quilting cotton. He now has told me that it is the main shaft that is broken and the motor is shot and cannot be repaired. I know that the machine is old, but has been used very little in the past 5 years...kind of a bummer..now I need advice on purchasing a new machine.

johnr553/23/08What a shame about your machine! That would make me sick, too. I think you would do best to stick with the 'big 3' if you want a machine of top quality: Pfaff, Bernina or Viking. Good luck, and let us know what you decide--

Celeste3/24/08Go online to ebay, choose a vintage Bernina 1130, 1030, 930 or 1230 from a good seller. It will be around $800 to $1000 for a dream machine. Oh yeah--be very wary of Viking, Pfaff and Singer--the 3 just merged and Viking and Pfaff have been having some real struggles. The Singer name might be salvaged but who knows what will happen next?? I just don't think these companies are real solid right now. The website for Viking and Pfaff looks bare bones and for "top-line" manufacturers this sort of looks like a bad omen. Right now there is a Babylock Crafters' Choice that looks new on ebay for a little under $800 that would also be very nice. If you get a brand new machine try Babylock for price--but if you buy a good old machine do what I did and get a great vintage Bernina, you will not be sorry.
