| | What wiccawonder likes about this machine I am a quilter. So I needed a machine that had certain features: needle up/down, ability to change presser feet easily so on and so on. So in January I purchased a Viking Platinum 750. I never really adjusted to the Viking it, was computerized and loud. It had a ton of features and of course the "status" of owning a Husqvarna Viking, but I just didn't like it. So I began my search and decided on the Kenmore. Man if I had only come here first. This machine is great. It's not computerized but it does have needle up/down and you can adjust the presser foot pressure and it quiet. So far I've sewn for 4 hours straight with no problems. If you wind the thread and bobbin properly the machine will work. The presser foot pressure is great especially for piecing. I mainly sew with 100% cotton fabric but I have done some free motion work with the machines and it can work through the layers of a quilt. My free motion foot from my Viking worked on this machine but not the 1/4 foot. If you select the most right straight stitch on the machine it will sew a very scant 1/4 inch but if you want a true 1/4; I would recommend purchasing the 1/4 piecing foot. The feet are so inexpensive compared to cost of feet for my Viking. I already ordered the appliqué foot. The use of the machine is very intuitive If you sew frequently you should have no problems operating the machine. If you are looking for a basic solid quilting machine this is for you. While it is not computerized and doesn't have a ton of decorative and embroidery stitches it will get most jobs done and done well. I have found a machine that I love, now I have to figure out what to do with the $900 Viking? What wiccawonder does not like about this machine Nothing so far but will keep everyone updated. | *LOGIN to add a comment to this review *Only registered members can post comments to the reviews. | Reader Comments | | mufffet | 4/21/08 | I hear you about loving the machine. I love my Viking, but I also love my Kenmore. That's where the guilt starts to eat at you! :)) I have several machines and love them all. If you can, keep the Viking. You never know when you will want to use it again, and you may yet love it down the line. If you can sell it for what you paid, and you feel you must, I am sure you can sell it. | | * * * | | singer4me | 4/21/08 | I agree completely with your review! This is a great machine. I'm planning to order a 1/4" foot and the open toe satin stitch foot for mine. I'm still surprised by how quiet this machine is compared to others I've used. I agree that it is very intuitive to use, and you can't beat the price. Thanks for the positive review. | | * * * | | Celeste | 4/21/08 | You could sell the Viking on the classifieds here--or on ebay | | * * * | | JudiBee2 | 4/22/08 | Does this have drop feed dogs? I would like to know how the stitching looked on the back when you did your free motion quilting. Thanks, Judi | | * * * | | Jan D | 4/22/08 | I am looking for a machine and will check this one out | | * * * | | wiccawonder | 4/23/08 | To Judibee2 yes you can drop the feed dogs on this machine. I am teaching myself to free-motion quilt and that is a feature I wanted. | | * * * | | oldschool | 4/24/08 | I bought this machine last Saturday, so far so good. Will the many drop in plastic bobbins I have work in this machine? | | * * * | | bestgrammy | 5/15/08 | oldschool If your many other plastic bobbins are Kenmore or Janome plastic bobbins then they would be made for this sm. Do NOT use metal bobbins due to this sm having a magnetized horizontal bobbin system. Several PR members has posted that generic class 15 plastic bobbins work in their Kenmores, but others have posted that they don't for them. Of course, class 66 bobbins will not work. | | * * * | | Brenda T. | 5/27/08 | I have also purchased this machine and am trying it out. So far, everything is fine. Some of the decorative stitches aren't looking so great, but I haven't really done much with it. The price is wonderful and the regular old straight stitch looks great! I'll experiment some more and let you know. | | * * * | | wiccawonder | 6/21/08 | Update** Hello everyone it has been 3 months later I gave my Viking another try. I did some free motion work, but alas I put the dust cover on and put the Kenmore back in it place. I love my Kenmore. When your doing free motion quilting you might have to adjust the tension it is really simple. All you need is a small screw driver. Also you might want to adjust the speed to medium. I keep kicking myself for buying the Viking it serves me right for trying to be a "name brand" snob! | | * * * |
