| | What wsu 1 fan likes about this machine I purchased my Juki in direct response to my frustration of not being able to run decorative threads through both loopers, at the same time with my Simplicity SL 390. (This is a very good basic serger, but not quite what I needed any more.)
I absolutely ADORE my Juki!!!! I have only had it three months but feel bonded with it already. I have yet to do apparel on this due to my current time constraints. This I will do this summer. Anyhoo, what I LOVE about my Juki:
Easy to thread, especially the loopers. The upper looper, you just pull the thread through, for the lower, you push down on lever that brings out a hook, pull it through, let go of the lever, and its threaded! The guides are all color coded for easy threading, and they are. Its a bit different from what I have been used to. The looper threads wrap around before going through the loopers, and I did have to consult the manual a few times to make sure I was doing it right. After the first few times, its old hat.
The needle threader WORKS! Of my new machines, this is the only one that I can get to work, and every time.
The stitches came perfect right out of the box. When I change the tensions, I can just dial them back, and the stitches are perfect! With my previous serger, I really had to do a lot of fiddling around which frustrated me and wasted time. I personally didn't want auto threading because of the decorative threads I want to use. I would like to say again how thrilled I am with the quality of the stitches, and how easy it is to get these good stitches.
The rolled hem is built in, so you don't have to switch out the plate. This is SO nice. Once again, my old serger would do the prettiest rolled hems, but then when I would switch back to my regular serging it would take forever to get decent stitches. My Juki does pretty rolled hems, in addition to the convenience of just moving a switch!
You can also just adjust the dial to get your stitches to be snug with the fabric. I haven't had to do that at all! On the Bernina, its called "Microthread control".
I can tell how much more powerful this is, it really just cuts through layers without bogging down whatsoever. It has a nice smooth feel when I'm serging, and sounds that way too! Its fed through the feed dogs like its really taking the fabric. I like the position of the upper and lower blades too. They are just much more conducive to how I work, and I don't feel like they are in my way when I'm trying to serge.
The bonus of my Juki MO-734 DE is that it came with 8 free feet!!! I can't wait to figure out how to use all of them this summer when I have the time off! They came in a nifty plastic container, with descriptions of each foot.
This comes with the fabric scrap catcher. I love it!!! Its so nice having everything fall into the bin, versus picking it up off of my floor! It fits snugly into the serger, and I don't feel like its in the way at all.
The lighting placement is good.
I debated for WEEKS, and posted here while trying to decide which serger I wanted. I have absolutely no regrets with my serger, and would recommend it highly to anyone looking for a quality serger. FYI, Juki makes the Bernina sergers, and I found its twin at the local Bernina dealer for about $500 more, and with no additional feet!!!
As I said, I will have more comments about serging on apparel fabrics this summer. I can't wait! What wsu 1 fan does not like about this machine Just a few minor quibbles:
The owner's manual is not bad in comparison to some of the others I have had. It does take me a bit to find what I need. I think I'm going to get copies made of the English pages, and then have them spiral bound for easier use.
I have to get used to letting the machine do the work versus me forcing the issue....which I had to do with my old serger. I have broken a few needles serging this way. Gotta break myself of this bad habit!

| Reader Comments | | mufffet | 4/30/08 | Excellent review! Thanks! It sounds like a terrific serger. The tip about Juki making the Bernina sergers is great to know! | | * * * | | runnerchicki | 5/1/08 | Great review, and very timely for me since I just bought this very model (used). I am extremely happy to hear that it has the dial adjustment that Bernina calls MTC. I wasn't sure if it was the same feature or not. Thanks so much! | | * * * | | Betakin | 5/1/08 | I enjoy reading a review where the owner is thrilled with her machine and I can see that you really appreciate this excellent serger. The micro thread control seems like an excellent feature to have.
I'm confused however about your comment of not wanting auto tension on a serger because you use decorative threads. The tensions on my serger are automatic and I use deco threads constantly. I can adjust tensions should they need ever arise. I understand that on some brands of sergers the auto tensions cannot be adjusted and was wondering if that is the reason you decided against getting one.
I would like to know more about the types of stitches your Juki is capable of doing. It seems like a dandy. It is so nice that it came with all those extra feet. Enjoy. | | * * * | | purplepeach | 5/1/08 | Now that's a review. Enjoy your serger! | | * * * | | wsu 1 fan | 5/1/08 | Betakin, from some of the serger reviews I read, they mentioned a bit of trouble with the auto tension. The big factor for me was the cost of a serger that has the auto tensions! I believe I got a great serger for a great price, but it was the most I have ever spent on a piece of sewing equipment! So when I'm old and feeble, and I can't see worth a darn, I am sure I will be getting one of those fancy-schmancy auto tension sergers! Really! As far as the MTC, this was debated back and forth on my original post whether or not it was. From what I see, and what my serger does versus the Bernina, and how they are built and appear in both photos and person, it appears to function in the same way. Once I get to play with my cool new serger, I will update the review with how the stitches look to me. I pulled out my manual and this is what they have: 4-thread overlock, 3-thread super stretch, 3-thread overlock, 3 thread flatlock, 3 thread narrow seam, 3 thread roll hem, 2 thread wrapped overlock, 2 thread flatlock, and 2 thread roll hem. mufffet, runnerchicki, betakin, and purplepeach, thanks for all of the kind comments. I just wanted to show how happy I was with it with limited use. I really felt like I was moving from a compact car to an Escalade! | | * * * | | Betakin | 5/1/08 | Thank you so much for taking the time to reply with the list of all the stitches. I know how you feel getting this nice serger. I paid the same for my serger right to the penny (not $800 but $799) and it is the most I have ever paid for sewing equipment but you are so lucky to get all those feet with yours.
I always thought if anything ever happens to my serger, I will get a Juki. My serger is very large, almost the size of a sewing machine and I do need a smaller one because..LOL..I "am" old and feeble and can't see worth a darn and cannot be moving the large one I have from place to place...:)
I do rely on the reviews for Juki because I have no local dealer. So far, I have seen no complaints about Juki sergers. You are going to have so much fun using your serger till your update, I'll be looking forwward to it. | | * * * | | johnr55 | 5/1/08 | Great review-thanks! | | * * * |
