| | What goldenthreads likes about this machine The Designer SE operates very quietly and very smoothly. It has almost 51 presser feet that it can accomodate which is one of the reasons I purchased this machine. So far, I've bought the adjustable bias binder foot, clear seam guide foot (I love it!!), marking foot to transfer pattern markings as tailor tacks, and the clear 5-pintuck foot in addtion to the eight (?) feet that the machine came with. The clear seam guide has improved my sewing tremendously because it is stable with the extra rack-guide on the right-- unlike the magnetic seam guide that constantly moved as I was sewing fabric on my previous machine.
The automatic ability of the SE to cut the thread and raise the presser foot automatically--- Well bring on the band!!! I LOVE IT!
I also love Sewing Advisor and the associated menus and help.
I can't wait to buy the Tailor presser foot which is supposed to layout the pattern, cut the cloth, and have my garment ready for me the next morning. I believe this machine is capable of that!! (LOL)
Refilling the bobbin without unthreading my machine-- wonderful!!
I love the accessory storage case for my presser feet. I love the extra spool capabilities. And I love love all the decorative stitches I can do. And I haven't even started to explore the embroidery capability. My hoops are still in the box
So far, I've found the SE documentation to be very good.
I never thought I would pay so much for a SEWING machine. But I did, and I don't regret it a bit. What goldenthreads does not like about this machine I don't like the OVERLY_CLOSED proprietary approach that Viking uses. Why can't I use my own flash drive to save my embroideries? Why does this have to be Viking's ?? which means I pay extra to get their memory stick instead of being able to use any flash drive available in the marketplace. Shame on you, Viking. This is just greedy. Is that really necessary after customers pay so much for this machine. And do you really have to charge $50 for hard-copy users guide?
I also would like to have a phone number to call for help.. just as I would on any other $7000 computer.
I also don't llike that there's not an instruction DVD that covers examples and usages of the 51 presser feet. Also, I haven't yet done buttonholes, so I can't comment on that yet either way. | *LOGIN to add a comment to this review *Only registered members can post comments to the reviews. | Reader Comments | | johnr55 | 5/3/08 | Thanks for a good review. Hard for me to believe you paid 100 times what I paid for the Brother machine I just reviewed! I'd love to hear from one of the sewing machine mechanics on here, how much internal hardware is now being shared with Singer machines. | | * * * | | Sewwolf | 5/4/08 | I believe a flash drive is a flash drive. unless they don't allow you to format it, if it needs it. that's like Janome saying you needed a special cable to hook machine up to computer. It 's not special it's a standard USB cable. I would research the flash drive thing. Other then that sounds like a wonderful machine. | | * * * | | Celeste | 5/4/08 | John, are you referring to internal hardware on the new computerized machines using some of the same stuff the from the brand new current Singers?? | | * * * | | Sewwolf | 5/5/08 | John can't compare two machine the viking is a TOL embroidery machine. That's why it 100 times more. It's like comparing apples in oranges. | | * * * | | shana707 | 5/6/08 | It is possible to use other flash drives--just make sure that they're 1.1 compatible (whatever that means!). You might want to check out the yahoo Designer SE list for more info. I agree, the machine really is wonderful. The button holes are the best I've seen on current machines. | | * * * | | johnr55 | 5/6/08 | Sewwolf, I assume you are trying to say comparing apples to oranges, not 'apples in oranges'. A sewing machine, sewwolf, is still a sewing machine. Perhaps this machine does indeed sew a garment one hundred times better than my little vintage machine, but I'd bet against it. I'm delighted there are people who can pay most of the price of a new car for a sewing machine; I've done it with cameras. I still wonder how much internal Viking hardware and software is now being shared with the much cheaper Singer machines. I certainly hope not. | | * * * | | goldenthreads | 5/7/08 | johnr55.. i am not defending my purchase decision with comment. However, there is a WORLD of difference between the way my SE sews and the way my old Janome sewed. My results have improved significantly. I'm quite happy with my decision. | | * * * | | goldenthreads | 5/7/08 | Shana707, I just made my first buttonhole. It was PERFECT. You are so right. | | * * * |
