What SewBrazilian likes about this machine
I bought this serger at Wal-Mart. I sew a lot of stretch fabrics, thin knits garments. I was hoping to make my sewing experience faster and easier. Silly me! It was a complete hassle!

What SewBrazilian does not like about this machine
1) the light is not enough
2) The rolled hem on thin stretch knits is a joke! I tried all kind of threads even the wooly nylon!
3) It sews too fast and if you need to slow down for corners it is not convenient
4) It is a hassle - I mean - a REAL HASSLE to adjust tension for thin stretch knits. It took me more than an hour trying to get it right and I finally gave up the rolled hem on knits.
5) I didn't like the quality of the stitches. I can do better on my sewing machine with the overcast foot.
6) It came with a DVD for computer only. I don't have a DVD drive in my PC so I could not watch it. I did get a serger DVD at the local library and all the books I could get about sergers.

I figured out how to thread it. Threading a serger is a more elaborate process than a sewing machine but once you get it, it is fine. Some parts of this machine are a bit harder to get to but you can do it. The upper looper is kind of hidden and hard to get to.

The worst thing, if not desperate, was adjusting tension!! I hated it!

If you want this machine for straight sewing - like hemming blankets or cotton seams - that'll do.
But don't fool yourself if you want it for garment construction, especially thin stretch fabrics.

I have already returned it!

catsmeow5/6/08So sorry this machine did not work out well for you! Do you think you might want to try the Brother 1034D serger that Walmart carries? It has a lot of great reviews. I have one and I really like it. Hope you find a serger that will work well for you!

SewBrazilian5/6/08Catsmeow, I really don't know... I had thought about getting a Brother. I read your review. I decided to get the Singer to see if I would be able to thread and to help me understand what a Serger is, how it works... but now I am wondering if it would really help me. I sew a lot of stretch knits, jersey, fleece... I can get nice overcast stitches and even rolled hem on my sewing machine. This experience made me wonder... will I ever get one...

Celeste5/6/08Save, save, save and get a Babylock Imagine serger. Not the Imagine Wave, it's more than you will need, but you can get Imagine sergers on ebay for much cheaper than new. I asked for money gifts for Christmas, Mother's Day, you name it to save for mine and got it in 2004--what a dream! I use it every week on something and it was my first serger. The second month I had it I was doing a wedding veil edging, beautiful edging on crushed panne velvet, rolled hems, everything! And with the jet air threading I can even thread it without my glasses! The needle threader still works every times and isn't shabby like some needle threaders. There isn't a thing about it that is bad!!!
