| | What minnietheminks likes about this machine I love that all the gears and parts of this machine are metal, it is a real workhorse. That the stitch quality is fantastic, that it comes in a red case :) It is really easy to use, I love it already.
I started sewing a year ago and bought a secondhand Brother machine to see if I really liked to sew. I did, but I soon realised that the stitch quality was not the best... so I did some research (on this site) and found that the machine I was looking for was the Bernina 830.
I watched NZ ebay, Trade Me, like a hawk and some 830's went for 575 NZD but then this one came up with 23 different feet included for 300 NZD (230 USD) and I jumped at it.
I have only been using it to do a sampler until I get to know what all those feet do, but already I can feel the difference when I am sewing and see the difference.
Will update this review when I have done more! What minnietheminks does not like about this machine Nothing so far... but its been a short affair.... | *LOGIN to add a comment to this review *Only registered members can post comments to the reviews. I wish you the best with your Bernina. | | * * * | | ncegbu | 5/10/08 | You are going to love this machine. Make sure you take it for its annual check up and it will serve you well. I've had mine for 5 or 6 years and despite having other machines (including computerized ones), I always turn to this one. It is so reliable and consistent. and will sew through just about anything. | | * * * | | Celeste | 5/10/08 | I bought an older Bernina 1130 a few months ago--HEA-VEN!! I would much rather have a roomful of these older Berninas than one top of the the line machine. | | * * * | | Donna H | 5/10/08 | Please update this review when you've had it longer and have run it through it's paces.
Oh, and you don't have to take it in for yearly check ups. You can service this yourself and save tons of $$$. Check for service manuals online. That's part of the fun of owning an all mechanical machine. YOU can service it yourself! Have fun. | | * * * | | VtMartha | 5/10/08 | I've had this machine for over 30 years and still love it! | | * * * | | RadarRadiance | 5/11/08 | Great Review!! You will enjoy this machine and they are a wonderful machine for sewing most anything.
This machine does like more oil than the new ones. Find all the oiling spots and feed it!!! I've had my 830 for 28 years and bought it from my mom when she went to upgrade so it is special! Actually she only upgraded so I could afford to buy hers and get a great machine. I did everything on that machine. The open toed darning foot is my favorite for free motion embroidery (thread painting), I've done so many towels and cool things with it prior to the computerized embroidery machines. It sews flawless.
It also makes a beautiful buttonhole and also a gimp buttonhole. It is one of the few machines I could get my buttonholes to turn out over uneven material. It's more manual but does exactly what you tell it to do....enjoy! | | * * * | | anncie1 | 5/11/08 | This is the machine I have and a friend found it in Cali at an estate sale $150! I luuuv it and it's my favorite. Take good care of it and it will continue to pump out wonderful items for you! | | * * * | | mothermary | 5/13/08 | My Bernina Record 830 is 34 years old. It was bought on credit for $600 when I was a teenager. The credit allowed me to buy my first house. The machine has done it all, wedding dresses, a tux, prom dresses, embroidery, all my girls clothes, men's shirts for the offensive line football team to get me thru college, buttonholes, etc... i can't believe how much this machine has held up in value and working ability. I am looking for a new machine only because I would like the computerized version to do custom embroidery. there is so much to choose from. Enjoy the Bernina Record 830. it will sew silk, leather, denim and more with just a change of the needle. I used to take mine with me to craft fairs and do freehand embroidery (monogramming) with the round circle foot- | | * * * | | minnietheminks | 5/16/08 | Thanks for all your feedback :) I will put up more of my experiences with this machine when I have them. I love the fact this machine is so loved Yipeee. | | * * * | | Hilary | 5/19/08 | congrats on your new machine!! I love this one in the red case :D I don't have it, but I know you got a great deal~good for you! I have a Bernina 530 Record, and I love mine as well ($35 at a thrift store, with lots of feet, original instruction booklet, and the case-woohoo!). Anyway, have fun with your new machine!! | | * * * |
