What donna mel likes about this machine
I love everything about this machine! It was a huge investment and a very long process to convince myself to take the plunge. But, it was SO worth it!
I initially wanted a machine that could handle free motion stitching. I paint silk and often sew it with cotton and velvets. I love embellishing with free motion top stitching and was not enjoying the process with my cheap Kenmore. The Bernina 440 comes with a Stitch Regulator/Free Motion attachment. What a joy! Stitches are even and the movement is totally free.
I also needed a walking foot, which came with the 440 also. It works wonders sewing silk and velvet together.
The added bonus is that EVERYTHING I sew is so easy. This machine needs no begging or body contortions to go through difficult maneuvers. Stretchy, bulky, slippery fabrics sew like cotton.
I had given up sewing clothing, but now am loving it, thanks to my Bernina and patternreview.com. The overlock stitch makes sewing knit seams a breeze.

What donna mel does not like about this machine

sewdays5/12/08Hi Donna, Thanks for the review on this machine. I am a garment sewer looking to learn to quilt and have heard that FMQ is difficult to learn, but I haven't yet tried it on my current machines. I have been eyeing the Bernina and want to know if there is a big learning curve with the BSR?

WJM5/12/08I'm happy to read you like your machine. I just purchase the 430 and have played with it a bit and love it! I am a garment sewer and did not need the free motion stitching that's on the 440. Maybe someday I'll get into that, but for now I'm enjoying the machine, my first Bernina. I can now see why Bernina owners do love their Berninas. It is amazingly solid. I was always a Pfaff girl, but that is changing! Enjoy your new machine!

pintuck6/9/08Thanks for a very good review. I, too, have always been a Pfaff woman but have always hankered after a Bernina. Sounds like this machine is a really good investment as I am more interested in the quality, ease of use, and stitch capabilities rather than the number of embroidery stitches. Does the walking foot on the Bernina compare favorably with that of the Pfaff as this is one thing I could not live without?

donna mel6/10/08hi pintuck, i have never used the pfaff walking foot, so can not compare. you should go to a bernina dealer and ask to try it out. this is what sold me on the bernina...two minutes behind the machine and i was writting a check!
