| | What Msews2 likes about this machine I got this machine with the newest upgrades (Embroidery package and Border Hoop) after trading in my Ellure BLR. The price I got will be a little different because of my trade-ins (I had a lot of pieces), but MSRP for this machine is currently $5999 (I did not pay this).
I don't have enough space to list everything I love about this machine, but here are few things (esp. if you have the border upgrade). I love that I can hoop things quickly and get them done--when my DH "forgot" to get his mom a Mother's Day present, I was able to create a set of embroidered placemats in about 1/4 the time (and with better results) than my Ellure or even my previous machine would have taken. She was struck by how nice they looked, and they were truly unique for her. I love the pivot option even though most of my sewing is garment and not home dec or quilting. I love the auto-jump thread trim for redwork embroidery in particular. And unlike an earlier reviewer who said that this is a good machine for intermediate and advanced users (I'd agree with that), I think a beginner would really benefit from the onscreen general sewing assistance.
I absolutely LOVE the fact that you can do regular sewing with the embroidery unit still attached. What Msews2 does not like about this machine Only things (and I know these are nits, but for this price I can be a little picky):
1. On the border/repeating patterns option, you can set "register" marks for lining up the next stitching. These are stitched at the END of the last thread color--neither a separate color nor at the beginning of the stitch. I like to use water soluble thread for any temporary stitching if the fabric's compatible, so this presents an annoyance for me. I've ended up using the air-& water-soluble markers for this instead. An upgrade that changes this would be really helpful.
2. On both these "register" marks and autobasting (also in the upgrade), a lockstitch is always sewn at the beginning. Not only is this unnecessary, but it can create a hole in the fabric. I'm not going to use either with tightly woven or fine fabrics. If someone knows how to turn off the lockstitch at the beginning in embroidery mode, please let me know. | *LOGIN to add a comment to this review *Only registered members can post comments to the reviews. | Reader Comments | | mufffet | 5/14/08 | Thanks for a complete review including the details of your dislikes. | | * * * | | granny sews | 5/16/08 | I was happy to read about the newest upgrade. Thank you for the input. I was considering getting it for my Brother Duetta but didn't know anyone who has it. When the registration marks are stitched, do you line up the next embroidery at the "register" stitch? I'm going to see the dealer next week and try to learn more. I love the fact that this machine is so user friendly. | | * * * | | Msews2 | 5/19/08 | I think the idea is that you start stitching the next border and see if the registers line up in the same place. However, since they stitch at the very end, that is difficult unless you scan ahead to the first stitch of the register mark. If they would just make this a color change (even leaving it at the end) that would be very helpful. | | * * * | | sewinggeek | 5/19/08 | The alignment stitches are used when you line up for the next set of stiches. On the stitch screen you use the trace and align buttons to check alignment before you start to sew. It is on most Brother emb machines now. | | * * * | | sonja6 | 6/10/08 | Are you having any problems with your machine? I am looking at purchasing one late summer, 2008. I am still looking at ALL upper end machines. Can a beginner/beginner advance use this machine and are the directions in manual easy to understand? I tend to be a visual learner so a good manual is a must. would you suggest getting the workbook? any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks | | * * * | | Msews2 | 6/11/08 | My only reservation would concern the quilting aspects--all other directions are also presented visually on the LCD panel, which would work for visual learners. | | * * * |
