| | What addicted2fabric likes about this machine I am so totally in love with this machine I cant even begin to accurately express how much I adore it!
For many years I have just had older, second hand machines with the most basic of features, and I've always been happy with them. In the past I have always said all the fancy extra's that modern machines have are a waste of money, after all I have never missed not having them. Well! All that changed with the purchase of my new Elna! Its easy to not see the need for something when you dont have it, but once I got all these new features, its so hard to see how I did without them for so long!
I love how it automatically ties off the ends, almost eliminating the need to ever back stitch. I will say I do think the back stitch button could do with being a little larger for when you do what to use it, although I am quickly getting used to using this one. I also love how you can set it to stop with the needle either up or down, again almost eliminating the need to ever touch the flywheel.
I love the choice of built in stitches. My past machines have had a few fancy stitches that I never used. This machine has stitches I will actually use, and a big reason why is due to the excellent manual that comes with the machine. Its incredibly informative with clear, precise instructions. It gives examples of when and where to use the stitches. For example, on my list of projects I'd like to try soon is swimwear and underwear. The manual mentions certain stitches that are used in the construction on both swimwear and underwear. So now I know what the stitches are for, I will use them and have a better finish on my garments.
I was simply ecstatic to find it has three (3!!!) different automatic button hole choices, especially a jeans button hole.
The selection of feet is also great and again the manual explains how to use them and on what fabrics. The onboard storage is very handy too.
The machine has great needle pressure and is excellent on very thick fabrics as well as fine, gauzy fabrics.
I sew a lot of denim and home upholstery type fabrics and this machine handles 4 or 5 layers of denim without missing a beat.
The retractable cord on the foot control is quite nifty and I like how the lack of bulky cords means it actually does all pack away into the covers pockets neatly.
I like how solid the machine feels. Its heavy enough to not move around on the table, even when sewing large, bulky fabrics, but still light enough to be able to lift it without putting your back out. Although the outer casing is plastic, inside everything is aluminium and well built to last.
The machine is very quiet and extremely easy to use.
Its like Elna has looked at what I like to sew and built a machine just for me. They have taken all the small, annoying things about home sewing, that I didnt even know where bothering me and eliminated them.
I give this machine a 10/10.
What addicted2fabric does not like about this machine If I ever find something to not like, I'll let you know. So far I cant find fault with it, and I am really picky and pedantic! | *LOGIN to add a comment to this review *Only registered members can post comments to the reviews. | Reader Comments | | Sewnknit | 6/18/09 | Sounds like a great machine. Thanks for the review! | | * * * | | Mufffet | 6/18/09 | Elna's are so nice and also pretty. ;) Thank you so much for this review of a terrific machine! | | * * * | | jilly cooper | 6/19/09 | Gee that machine looks so streamlined! I liked how you detailed the features, automatic tie off sounds great and I like the fact that the manual gives info on which stitches suit which fabrics. Happy sewing. PS: I know about those oldie machines, I have a few and although I love their all metal construction I am saving to buy a modern one too. | | * * * | | Joanne77 | 6/19/09 | I love a review that clearly reflects the owner's love and enthusiasm for their new machine and this one does that and more. Makes me want to buy one of these but several things make that not a possibility. Thanks for a lovely review! | | * * * | | Franksdottir | 6/19/09 | I don't blame you for loving your Elna. I had the 6400 which I bought in the ninetie's and which I loved - I would be using it now except that I now need a start/stop button. DD will inherit it once I get it serviced, and she is looking forward to it. I hope you have many years of pleasure with your new baby. | | * * * | | Michele Lommasson | 6/20/09 | Very nice review. Thanks.
It sounds like you have found the perfect machine for you! Congratulations. | | * * * |
