| | What denise4517 likes about this machine I was surprised to see a couple of discussions on this machine. This was my first machine. It was a welcome relief from the 1960s Singer and 1980-something Singer Futura I was using. Mine still works and the whole time I've owned it I've only taken it in once because of a broken needle (after many others) that fell into the needle plate, causing skipped stitches on knits. Otherwise, it has worked great.
It's great for top and edge stitching. The stitches are so straight. It's simple and easy to use. Threading, bobbin winding and tension adjustment are so easy, which may be why the owner's manual is merely a large pamphlet with about 8 pages of information.
The stitch options are limited and utilitarian, but since I only sew adult clothing (esp. when I attended fashion design school), this was fine. What denise4517 does not like about this machine It doesn't like heavy fabrics and I've had my share of needles break. It especially hated getting started in rolled hems made of denim and going over 3 layers of flat-felled seams (like when hemming a pair of jeans). I would use the hand wheel in these instances and the machine still struggled. The machine is under 10 lbs., so it would shift on me at these times.
It has a simple 4-step buttonhole, that didn't make the greatest looking buttonholes, but they were ok.

| Reader Comments | | dbsewer | 6/28/09 | A Viking I've never heard of. Wow. Could you post a picture? It sounds like a wonderful workhorse. | | * * * | | sewfrequent | 6/28/09 | I'm wondering how similar it is to the 150 that I bought just recently. I too was stunned at the gorgeous straight stitch. Also i don't have a manual so it is good to know i'm not missing much and i'd only need it for the buttonholes so if they're sub-par i wouldn't use it anyway. Thanks for doing a review! | | * * * | | Beth Pierce | 6/29/09 | Sounds like you're "on the fence" about this machine. I never heard of this version Viking either. A picture would be nice. | | * * * | | JaniceM | 6/29/09 | One of my close friends, who is a fabulous quilter, has this machine. She bought it new in the eighties, and she will never part with it. It does make a very nice stitch. | | * * * | | denise4517 | 6/29/09 | The buttonholes are ok, but it's a 4-step buttonhole, the human decides on stitch length, etc. The suggested length posted on the machine resulted in somewhat widely spaced stitches for buttonholes IMHO. | | * * * | | denise4517 | 6/29/09 | Just to clarify, I really do like this machine, but its biggest problem is that it doesn't handle getting started in denim rolled hems, but after a rough start it will sew fine until it reaches 3 layers of flat felled seams, which is when it really struggled. Like others have said, it does make great stitches and sews straight so well. (I think it does a better job of top stitching and edge stitching than the Pfaff I recently purchased.) And, I hate to say it, I have emotional attachments to this machine and still hold on to it. | | * * * | | johnr55 | 10/16/09 | I've looked on and off for years for one of the Classica 100 models. Does this machine have continuous stitch width, or only in steps? I wouldn't hold a compact machine like this in disregard for not being able to do all those denim layers. | | * * * |
