What annenet likes about this machine
This machine moved in with me last year but here is it's story:

My Mom received it in 1942 as a Junior High School graduation present. It was slightly used and the serial dates it to 1938, Elizabeth NJ. She got it in a very handsome Queen Ann cabinet with matching stool. Recently I recovered the stool cushion with leather. Besides being a wonderful machine it's a piece of art! This one has the lovely scroll work on the front and is still black with crisp gold decals and shiny chrome. Since it was always in a room in use, never an attic or basement and Mom maintained it along the way it came through it's most recent checkup with flying colors. Right now it proudly sits in the upstairs foyer next to our bedroom - the first thing that can be seen when walking up the stairs.

Now for why I love having it. First of all it's the machine I learned to sew on as a kid. My Mom didn't believe on teaching me on a toy. Nothing, NOTHING goes through leather and denim like this machine! It has a very powerful motor. It only goes forward and back but it does that absolutely perfectly. With the buttonhole attachment it makes really beautiful buttonholes. Also it has a very large and uncomplicated harp, a real asset when quilting. I just finished my first quilt and it worked like a champ! The feed dogs can be lowered for free motion. And it's very quiet to run. Also it came with a lot of accessories but I did get a free motion foot and walking foot and since it takes standard low shank feet they are readily available. Also it takes standard needles, the same ones I use in my Berninas. The bobbin is a drop in which make it very easy to load.

What annenet does not like about this machine
The only thing strange is the threading. I used a wire needle threader as it threads from right to left. That's a pretty minor complain though.

I feel like I am with an old friend while sewing with it. And there aren't many other mechanical items over 70 years old that hold up this well!

Mufffet 7/14/09What a beautiful machine and such beautiful memories to go along with it. And that you can still use it is so wonderful.

RadarRadiance 7/14/09What a pretty machine...how sentimental, especially since your mom taught you to sew on it!!!! Something to always hang on to and they are especially nice machines. Thanks for the review!

Christas 7/14/09What a very beautiful machine! Thanks for your review. Those older machines are so amazing. I have a 66-16 Singer from 1931 that stills works wonderfully and will sew through anything. I bought my machine 17 years ago. How neat that your older Singer has always been in your family!

BeautifulRune 7/14/09he he he, I completely know what you mean about threading from right to left rather then from front to back. I just got my hands on a singer 15-90 and thats how it threads. It it just so awkward at first!

Manalto 7/14/09You are indeed fortunate in these days of temperamental and flimsy plastic machines to have this classic Singer in your possession. I didn't realize the feed dogs could be lowered on the 201. Thanks!

gaginny 7/15/09I have one of these beauties too and love sewing on it....really sweet running machine.

catsmeow 7/15/09I have only heard wonderful things about Singer's 201-2. This model comes highly recommended by people who collect and use vintage machines. You have a real treasure -- not only in that it's a great machine, but in beautiful memories attached to it. Thank you for your review!

seweibhlin 7/15/09I also have a 201 I do not use enough-It truly is the quietest machine- it just purrs. newer machines have more features, but for workmanship and dependability-nothing compares to vintage machines like your beautiful Singer 201. Keep it oiled and check the wiring-it should last another 50 years. Thanks for your review.

KillerDuck 7/17/09My little 201 sits next to my 206, and works with me like an old friend. It is very happy making nice little detailed stitches, or pounding through web gear for SCUBA equipment. A 201-2 is the living legend of smooth Singer power. Peace out, and happy stitching! :)
