- Adjustable Presser Foot Pressure
| | What Quilting Queen likes about this machine Its most beautiful straight stitch, very straight and perfect stitches. As a quilter this is important.
It is a simple, simple machine that can do straight stitch. There is stitch length control but no zig zag capability. It can of course reverse, and it can have a screw set to reverse at the exact same stitch length as it sews forward, and serves also to limit the lever from being set too much longer than when first set-flipping forwards and backwards is easy and accurate with this simple little screw set into the lever.
It takes short shank feet and there are many in the vintage and new category that will work with it. It takes round metal bobbins and is top loading. Very large harp area.
It has a knee operator and is so quiet. I just have to think of the knee operator as the foot pedal, not a knee lifter like I have on other machines-little confusing at first but I've adapted well. It is just about the most quiet machine I think I've ever heard and is very smooth to sew with, almost meditative.
Mine has lovely greek key decals and dates to 1945, is the traditional black and gold old fashioned design not the art deco more modern styling.
Weight is substantial, not a portable machine.
There is a little extension table that connects to the side of the flat base machine.
I use my machine for piecing, making binding for quilts and would turn to it more if I had fewer machines. But is is lovely to have, a real piece of history. I would make home dec or other large items on this machine as it is nice and roomy.
I believe there is a button hole attachment available for these old machines that do killer button holes but I don't have one. I would probably prefer to plug in my sensormatic buttonhole and have the whole thing done automatically for speed and the choices of styles available in my wizard like Husqvarna Viking Designer 1.
The more I use her, the more I love her.
I have the original manuals that came with the machine and a lovely dome bentwood case too. What Quilting Queen does not like about this machine The only think I think annoys me is the lack of markings on the original stitch plate but I know I can easily get a marked one so I don't have to work so much with my seam gauge. There are modern versions to fit old machines.
The needleplate is abit burred anyway by its previous owners so I will likely replace it anyway.
Also the area around the light globe gets hot so be careful if you get one of these machines. Maybe use your left hand to lift the presserfoot rather than your right to avoid possibly burning your hand.
Also as an afterthought, mine has original wiring, It has been checked out and declared ok for time being, I guess it will one day need to be replaced or simply retire the machine as it would be expensive to re-wire where I live. It is just in the back of my mind that cloth covered wiring will not last as long as the modern wiring on modern machines. A firm eye will be kept on the state of the wiring. | *LOGIN to add a comment to this review *Only registered members can post comments to the reviews. It's great to have good reviews of old machines, as they do appear quite frequently in various places. | | * * * | | annenet | 7/16/09 | Nice review! Isn't wonderful to have such I nice vintage machine! Mom replaced the wiring on mine in the 90's so I do recommend that kind of maintance. | | * * * | | catsmeow | 7/16/09 | I have heard that this model is wonderful for those who like to quilt. It's a grand ol' straight stitcher! Thank you for a great review! | | * * * | | guineapig | 9/8/09 | I was thinking of buying one of these because of the quiet running and space in the throat. Your information has confirmed this. | | * * * |
