What dejuvu likes about this machine
I bought this machine USED from ebay Australia in December 2008. It was my first sewing machine and I was elated about the functions and quality of the stitches it makes. I took 1-2 months to research about both new and old machine before deciding taking this, I believe this machine is made in the early or mid 80's and it is very sturdy knowing that it is a "made in west germany" machine. I had used this machine on making shirts, dresses and pants for my family. Sometimes, I would even use this on thick fleece like materials. I use this machine for an average of 2-3 hours at least once a week since last December.

I have not face difficult in changing needle or bobbin. This machine seems sturdy and stable except I can get it to sew multi layers thick materials that well, even when I am using a denim needle. perhaps someone here can advise me.

The embroidery stitches this machine can handle is BEAUTIFUL! I had use the decorative stitches alot and this machine has more than I can ask for! 99 stitches and more!!! If you are looking for some vintage stitches, this machine will be IT! It is about 17lbs to carry so very easy to bring around for classes or travel.

The manual is not very friendly but for any experience sewer you may have figured your way out and I went to get another book PFAFF 1471 CREATIVE embroidery handbook and this is much much better than the skimpy manual. It shows the stitches in picture and what are the attachments and work step to achieve the result! I can't live without this book and can be purchased off ebay.

This is my main sewing machine for now and I have a back up of an older pfaff and hope to write another review soon.

What dejuvu does not like about this machine
I don't know why but perhaps its me that I can't sew multi layers of denim or thick materials smoothly. And the distant between the throat plate and foot is about half inch or less... I have alot of difficulty with jammed materials and I am afraid this may damaged the machine in long run.

I love to hear your experience in dealing with thick materials!

Mufffet 8/9/09I have a Pfaff 1222E which is older than your machine. BUT, I understand what you say about the layers. The Pfaff has a very small clearance between the presser foot and the needle plate as you say. SO - although my machine will sew denim, or another heavy material, it can only really do two layers. It doesn't like to sew fleece at all. I don't sew much fleece, but when I tried to sew a fleece slipper with a rubber sole, that didn't go well at all. So this may be the way the machine is, and not much one can do about that. Does your older Pfaff sew these thicker multi-layers? Thanks for your review.

catsmeow 8/10/09Thank you for a great review of your machine! Sewing more than two layers of denim or other heavy fabric is quite a test for many machines -- even some made today. If you need to do this often perhaps you might want to consider purchasing another machine just for those heavy types of projects. By the way, the little boy in your picture is just tooooo cute!

Sewnknit 8/10/09Good review. I love my Pfaff. It is newer and I haven't had any difficulty with fleece. Continue to enjoy your sm!

Betakin 8/10/09Thank you for your review. Im sorry to learn though that your Pfaff has difficulty with thick layers of fabric . I have a mechanical Pfaff but a newer model that I have owned for several years and I use it mainly for thick fabrics and I use the IDT. I've used denim and coated outdoor fabric with my Pfaff and I am just finishing up a fleece coat for one of my Toddler dgks and it sewed through multiple layers of fleece, especially at the seams and it does top stitching on layers of fleece very well also. I think of all of the machines that I own including 3 other brands that are computerized that my Pfaff has the best stitch and it has a body style much like your Pfaff but my machine does have an extra high lift on the needle bar to allow for thick fabrics. I wish my Pfaff had as many stitches as yours does. Mine only has utility and smocking and scallop etc. no nice embroidery type but it does make a beautiful buttonhole and I love the many needle postions done by just turning a dial. It is nice to know that you are enjoying your Pfaff too.

gdgtmma 8/10/09HI. I have the 1473 and just did a project that had several layers of denim. My machine has an additional feature where you can raise the presser foot (I think it's called the darning position). You lift the presser foot up and to the back, and it sits higher. If you can't sew in this position, you could perhaps raise the foot while you place your fabric under the presser foot. Hope this helps!

dejuvu 8/11/09hello catsmeow, yes I have a pfaff 332-260 an older pfaff which I intend to use for heavier materials. I will put this machine to test for a few more months and write a review on it also. Thanks for compliments on my little prince, he's such a gem and proud recipient of my sewing endeavor!!!

divaknitting 8/12/09I wonder if your foot needs to be adjusted? I recently bought this machine at an estate sale and I was able to fit 8 layers of denim (not the super thick kind but probably 3/4 in thick) under it and it sewed with no problem.

sewverygood 8/31/09I've had the 1471 Creative since Nov 1987, it has been heavily used, mark you I do look after it. I have made applique wall hangings, free style machine embroidery and quilting, working with 4 ply yarn in the bobbin to work a design drawn on the back of a hooped fabric. Yes I filled 10 bobbins at a time!, and clothes of all thickness, including a substantial fur fabric. You can physicaly lift the foot and its elbow to get a thicker fabric under. My husband turned a replacement ankle screw from brass and made it with a chunky head, this makes doing the lift. I have been keeping my eye out for a replacement should my machine die on me, but nothing touches it. I took advantage of being able to invent your own stitches, I often saw a stitch that even the built in stitch range didn't include so I would add my own. This is not a quick process, but in my case well worth the time. As to the built in even feed system, total genius. By the way to those who do not know this machine, the picture illustrating a Pfaff machine is not the 1471. Thanks for listening.

dejuvu 9/26/09Divaknitting, 1471 is a good machine to be able to take thick materials but 8 layers of denim can be a little to harsh on this fellow? Have you attempt sending the machine for a tune up since you get it it home? It will help coz my technician here highlighted that there is a small base at the bottom of the SM base has a compartment for batteries and it will be good to make sure the battery does not leak. It will burn the mother board. Do give it a check!
