| | What SondraG likes about this machine My Kenmore 13550 is inherited from my mother. This is a great machine for my (beginner) skill level, and is probably fine for all basic sewing projects. It has all of the basic stitches I will probably ever need.
You can see a picture of the machine at http://www.flickr.com/photos/28871491@N05/3955131759/
Highlights:
- An easy-to use dial for selecting the stitch type
- The stitch dial is color-coded to match the settings on the stitch length dial
- Threading is straightforward.
- In general, the owner’s manual is clear. I was able to just follow the steps for threading, winding bobbins, etc.
I’ve used this machine for about 3 years for simple projects, and it hasn’t given me any problems.
What SondraG does not like about this machine The machine is a pain to oil. I don’t like having to lay it on its side and basically have to take off the entire bottom of the machine. Also, the pictures of what to oil don’t look exactly like what I see, so I’m never 100% confident I did what I was supposed to.
One annoying behavior is when I do zig-zag and the thread is feeding from the bottom of the spool, it sometimes gets itself tightly wrapped around the spool pin.
Overall, no huge issues, though. | *LOGIN to add a comment to this review *Only registered members can post comments to the reviews. Membership is free. if you are not a member, please Sign-up now! |

| Reader Comments | | Mufffet | 9/26/09 | This is such a pretty machine. You can always get it serviced every couple years and then a tech will do the hard oiling! When I had a Kenmore that was even older than this one you have I didn't dismantle my machine. Keep the bobbin area clean and oil the top where it needs it and maybe you will love it better! ;) Thanks for this review and the link to the picture! | | * * * | | The Canadian | 9/27/09 | My first machine looks identical to this but has a different model no., maybe because it is Canadian? Mine has a vertical bobbin (I believe there was one that looked like it with a horizontal bobbin).
I bought mine in March 1983, I have had new feed dogs put on it and a new tension knob. I have sewn everything from tents and pool table covers to babies clothes and halloween costumes. The only real complaint I had was the way it handled the finer materials.
I gave it to my son a year ago (mind you it is still here and he comes here to use it) and bought a new computerized machine, which I love but I still have a soft spot for my Kenmore. It just always seemed to get the job done. Matter of fact I have instructed my son that he cannot get rid of it he has to give it back to me!
I never had that problem with the zig zag but when it would happen when I wound bobbins sometimes.
