| | What barbcl likes about this machine I have found this machine to be great for the usual sewing tasks and really superior on multiple layers of medium weight knits, as in the neckline of Burda 8028 views B and C!
I made the Burda top in a very stretchy soft cotton thermal knit. I also stabilized most of the seams, including the V neck with collar with soft cotton upholstery tape. The machine never balked once or shoved the thread back down in a clump, no matter how fast I sewed. The seams did not ripple at all. The machine is smooth running and quieter than my other older machines. It is classified as a heavy duty machine.
The manual is pretty complete, including a detailed chart showing fabric weights with appropriate needle types and sizes (including colors of needles, such as for knit, heavy fabrics, and topstitching)!
Illustrations are clear, and the instructions are complete.
There are 50 automated stitch selections, many of which can be further modified for length and width.
The 9 straight stitch selections include a saddle-stitch-like option, beginning and end lock stitching using the reverse stitch button, and a stretch stitch for top stitching and quilting.
Among utility stitches is a tricot stitch for finishing the raw edge of synthetics and other fabrics that often pucker and a "serger stitch" for overedging fabrics than might ravel.
There are settings for square, round end, and keyhole buttons and instructions for corded and double-stitched buttonholes.
I found the tension to be very flexible and easy to adjust with the wheel provided.

| Reader Comments | | Mufffet | 10/22/09 | Yes, this machine goes over multiple layers very nicely. We love ours. Is the refurbed version (as I think we all know by now) of the Kenmore 19110, and a lovely white which I especially like. :) Many extra feet are available. Thanks for the good review. I especially appreciate your example of the sewing you were doing on it. | | * * * | | Franksdottir | 10/22/09 | This is an excellent review. It sounds like a really useful and fun machine to use. There is nothing like having a sewing machine which meets our needs to make us creative and efficient. | | * * * | | mom2littleman | 10/22/09 | So glad to hear another good review. I'm expecting this machine early next week. I sew knits for the most part. I'm happy to hear that it handles knits well. | | * * * | | poorpigling | 10/23/09 | No secret that I also love this machine.. easy to use, and so much fun. If mine ever died, I'd rush right out and buy another. Would recommend this for beginner sewers too. Thanks for your review.. | | * * * | | catsmeow | 10/23/09 | Loved reading about what you have sewn with this machine and how the machine did the job. Very nice review! | | * * * |
