| | What monahan likes about this machine This machine is quite a change from my Singer 4525. So, bear in mind that I'm still more than a little star struck. So far I've made a little quilt. That said (written) here's what I like/love about my new Curvy 8780.
1. stitches - It has some lovely built in stitches and the alphabet, though coarse, is a nice extra.
2. solid machine - no bounce even while using the walking foot on a quilt sandwich.
3. price - Free (it was a gift)! Actually, hubby bought it from Costco online for $280.
4. presser feet - Oy! The Costco box came with 17 feet including a walking foot and ruffler.
5. stitch width - up to 7mm
6. speed - Not sure how it compares to other new machines, but it whips my old machine.
7. auto-tensioning - So, far has worked for me. Didn't need to adjust tension while piecing my quilt or working on the whole sandwich.
8. needle up/down - Sooo helpful having the needle stop down when working to corners. Does require some getting used to as it takes an extra stitch once you release the presser foot.
9. auto-threading - Who knew? Love.
9. see through bobbin cover - 'nuff said.
The machine is pretty and the stitch selection panel is quite intuitive. Overall, I'm very, very pleased with my new baby. For the price we paid, I feel like we got a terrific bargain. What monahan does not like about this machine 1. The delay after releasing the presser foot. Once you release the foot, you must wait a few seconds before reversing or pressing the foot again before the machine starts.
2. When using the thread trimmer (to the left of the needle) sometimes the leftover needle thread is too short and pulls out of the needle when beginning to sew again. | *LOGIN to add a comment to this review *Only registered members can post comments to the reviews. | Reader Comments | | Mufffet | 10/27/09 | Thanks for this review. Will be looking to see how well this machine performs for you over time! Enjoy your new machine and I hope it gives you a lot of good work! | | * * * | | kmcc4444 | 11/3/09 | I am encouraged by your review. I too bought this machine online from Cosco and have thought about returning it. I still cannot figure out how to thread the machine (steps 1 and 2). The presser foot drives me crazy, when the machine finally does start again after release, it races away and is difficult to control. Also, I find the foot uncomfortable to use because it is so high and when you try to step on it, it shoots across the room. It is also difficult to see the sewing area and throat plate markings. The upside is that it has a very even feed and nice stitching. In the machine's defense, I confess I have little mechanical or innate ability for sewing, but intense desire to be creative. I just started sewing again after 20 years -- I had a Touchtronic 2001 which was lovely but I just broke it when the fabric was too thick.
Based on your review and others, I will keep practicing on this machine and hope to get used to it. I wish Singer had a different presser foot that you could use! | | * * * | | monahan | 11/4/09 | kmcc, check out the video on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68i2rEaYew8). They thread the machine at 3:25ish. Here's a pdf diagram too (http://www.singer.se/fi/pdf/curvy_8770_eng.pdf). Hope that helps. | | * * * | | maleydaba | 11/18/09 | can you use this machine to sew thick fabric and jeans? | | * * * |
