| | What diane s likes about this machine This one of Pfaff's basic mechanical machines with about 15 stitches, made in the Czech Republic, not Germany. It's my first Pfaff, I've always had Vikings. I have 2 machines in my sewing room, a Designer 1 and this one. I always use this machine when I'm embroidering and about half the time when I'm not. I bought this machine mainly for the IDT (integrated dual feed) which I use most of the time.
I use it on everything from knits to home dec. I had no problems sewing canvas slipcovers with it, there's a good clearance under the presser foot. You can also engage the IDT when using different feet, such as the zipper foot. I use the zipper foot for inserting cording in home dec projects and the IDT really helps to keep everything even.(especially at the end) I also like it when sewing knits, I can use the IDT with a zigzag stitch. With my Viking walking foot I can't insert piping or use a zigzag.
I thought having IDT and no adjustable presser foot would be a problem, but the only time it didn't work that well was on very thin (sheer) poly knits. It tended to be a little wavy, and I used my other machine with success.
There are times when I enjoy the simplicity of a mechanical machine.
No symbols to read or settings to overide, you just turn a dial and sew, when you stop the machine stops.
This machine has a 4-step buttonhole, but I've never used it, because I use my other machine for buttonholes.
I also like that it doesn't need oiling, except for a drop in bobbin hook every 15 to 20 hours. What diane s does not like about this machine It's a solid easy to use machine without alot of bells and whistles, and for that reason I like it for my back up machine but probably wouldn't want it for my only machine.
The features that pop up on the review are incorrect. This machine does NOT have a needle threader, drop in bobbin, adjustablle presser foot pressure or auto threading. | *LOGIN to add a comment to this review *Only registered members can post comments to the reviews. | Reader Comments | | Mufffet | 11/3/09 | Excellent review! Thanks. Yes, you can't beat IDT. If Pfaff's had more visibility at the needle area, I would have bought one of the Selects when I updated my sewing machine. | | * * * | | Betakin | 11/3/09 | Thank you for your review but there are several different model Selects. Which model Select is this? I have the older 1530 Select. It is not a push button style but instead has dials and more utility stitches rather than the quilty type stitches of the 1540 and it makes a beautiful buttonhole.
Just edited to say, thank you for now adding which model you reviewed and surprisingly it is the same model that I own..and love. | | * * * | | dbsewer | 11/3/09 | I have the 1540 mechanical and love it. Not fancy, but you can't beat the IDT. Thanks for a nice review. | | * * * | | my_seamstress | 11/3/09 | I really considered the Select 3.0, recently. I loved the idea of IDT and the push button stitch selection! The buttonhole was not impressive. Easy to use, but you'd have to mark both ends of each hole. That and the price made me stick with the ole Kenmore, already in my room. Nice review, though. There aren't many reviews on these. | | * * * | | Lil Flo | 11/4/09 | Years ago I had purchased one of these for $350 Brand new. At the time I didn't know what I wanted. I guess it was more bells and whisles. Anyway, I really regret selling this machine as it was a total workhorse. Thanks for your review. | | * * * | | Sewnknit | 11/8/09 | Sounds like a solid machine. I agree about the IDT. I love it. Very good review. Thank you. | | * * * |
