| | What yogaa likes about this machine I bought this serger on craigslist barely used. I was a bit unsure about buying a Singer, since their reputation is not that great anymore, but encouraged by good reviews here I decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed.
The threading is quite easy: the paths are color-coded and there is a diagram inside the looper cover. Also, the workbook that's available online shows color photos of the threading.
Auto-tension is great -- you turn a knob to set tensions for a particular stitch. Usually not much adjustment is needed.
Switching to cover stitch is not hard in my opinion, however, it could be a hassle to switch several times during a project.
I like having the option of the 5 thread stitch. It's really great for long straight seams on wovens.
Switching to rolled hem is really easy and it looks very nice. What yogaa does not like about this machine The manual is OK, but not that great. Plus it has a couple errors.
I wish the presser foot lifter was on the right, not behind the needle. Luckily, most of the time I can just lift the toe of the foot to insert the fabric, but on a few occasions it can be tricky since you really want to hold the fabric with the left hand, not the right.
I lacks some saftey features of more expensive sergers. For example it will sew with the presser foot in the 'up' positions -- makes a mess of your stitches. | *LOGIN to add a comment to this review *Only registered members can post comments to the reviews. | Reader Comments | | Mufffet | 11/4/09 | Another review of this machine has delineated the errors in the manual which is helpful. Have you downloaded the workbook at the Singer site? It is very illustrated and looks good. I don't have this machine but have looked at it a lot online. :) Thanks! | | * * * | | yogaa | 11/4/09 | Hi Muffet,
Yes, I downloaded the workbooks, and they are very helpfull. But they too have some silly errors, like it would say 'lower the foot and sew' in the middle of the threading instructions. Singer should really fix this -- it should not even cost them that much to do it. For the money though, it's a great machine. | | * * * | | Susannah | 11/4/09 | I too have often looked at this machine online--and just did so again, thanks to your good review! I keep looking for a reason to justify another serger.....maybe I'll hit the jackpot on Craigslist like you! | | * * * | | diningroomseamstress | 11/4/09 | Nice review. Sounds like a nice serger too. | | * * * | | HeyJane | 11/5/09 | I've had this machine for a couple years. It's really solid and has lots of features for the money. I couldn't ever find any binder attachments for it, though. Enjoy your machine! You got a great price! | | * * * | | Dmd4106 | 11/5/09 | Great price for this serger! Thanks for posting. Have you been able to use any of the binders or fellers for this machine?
| | * * * | | yogaa | 11/6/09 | No, I have not used any binders. Singer does not have any available. I am curious if anyone is using those generic binders from Ebay on this serger. | | * * * | | Anikins | 11/17/09 | yogaa, does your singer skip stitches? I am new at "serging" and am having trouble with the Wide Cover Stitch skipping at random times. I've adjusted the tensions and it seems to run fine for a bit, then it seems to go haywire for a number of stitches or just plain skips. Any suggestions? Thanks, Anikins | | * * * |
