1. 4, 3, 2, threads
2. free arm
3. rolled hem
4. differential feed
5. easy to thread
6. Reasonable price (something I won't have to consider financing!!)
7. not the company's lowest grade model
I initially was thinking of looking for a serger with coverstitch capabilities, but having that option really increased the prices, so I decided to forgo it, and save up for a coverstitch machine to buy sometime in the future.
This machine ticked all of the boxes.
I have heard of so many people who love the entry level Brother--the 1034D, so I was interested in the brand. A good friend and wise sewist recommended not buying a company's baseline model. She said that for a little more money you can get more features, and better quality. With that being said, I was initially looking at the Brother 3034D, but the retailer in my area wasn't selling them when I was out looking. After seeing the demonstration of this machine, I was hooked! It met all of my criteria.
It was easy to thread following color coded diagrams on the inside of the front panel.
It comes with 2 stitch fingers, one for a rolled hem and one regular one. They are easy to switch out. Retracting the knife is also very quick and easy.
The differential feed can either gather or stretch fabric.
I use the free arm often when sewing clothes for my kids.
One thing that wasn't on my 'must have' list was the automatic needle threader. I must say...I LOVE IT!! I had a little trouble successfully using it at first, then after reading the manual more closely, I discovered the key! There is a line on the handwheel that needs to line up with a vertical line on the side of the machine. Once that happens, the needles are at the correct height for the automatic threader to work. Easy-peasy!
I have been using this machine constantly since I bought it in September 2012. I've used it for knits, fleece, and wovens and any time I need to finish seams. I really enjoy using it. I don't find it loud--it's not silent, but it won't wake a sleeping child either (and it's quieter than my regular 15 year old sewing machine).
I would recommend this serger to anyone.
What LM2HYD does not like about this machine I really don't need or use the extension table. I simply don't have the space for it. | *LOGIN to add a comment to this review *Only registered members can post comments to the reviews. Membership is free. if you are not a member, please Sign-up now! |

Great review! I have the non-PRW labled version...the 4234DT. It really is a great value. My favorite feature is having the presser foot lever on the RIGHT side of the machine. No reaching around back while trying to hold your fabric!

Very nice review. My 1034D has the presser foot lever on the right and I do love that! I just used it today.

Great review, thanks. This information will come in handy when I'm ready to replace my current serger. And the table would be an attractive feature for me.
