This machine is delightfully stealthy -- it's branded as a hobby/beginner machine but is basically a nicer Tipmatic or Tiptronic in a rebadged case. I was told by a Pfaff dealer that it is almost similar to the Stretch and Jeans 6091 except for the tip buttons and takes the 6091 feet and accessories.

It has IDT, which is surprising in a hobby grade Pfaff, and a very quiet and powerful motor. I bought this machine off eBay and took a chance on what looked like a solid machine that needed TLC for a good price. In the end I did have to replace the foot control but since doing that and having a tuneup done it's been an absolutely great machine.

When I took it to be tuned up it came back with a note from the technician that it "runs like a mower" and both he and another long time Pfaff dealer have told me to hang onto the machine as long as I can. It's a workhorse and will power through multiple layers of fabric without hesitation and I like how smoothly it runs.

I love this machine except for sewing knits. It is not a happy camper and has trouble skipping stiches and bunching up with the tension dialed down and the IDT engaged. I much prefer my Brother with a walking foot for knits but if I sew wovens this Pfaff is a far better machine.

I also don't like that I have to turn the handwheel so the needle is positioned all the way at the top before I can remove what I'm sewing. I've read that this is a particular German made sewing machine quirk.

Awesome - how very nice to see your review. These are truly a great bunch of machines - same era - Hobbymatics and the Varimatics. Not really like hte much later Hobby machines...I have a basic Hobby from when they were pretty new as Hobby machine and first built by Janome. She's a tough little machine. I am sure yours is larger and probably made in Germany?

Great review. Why do you feel you need to adjust the tension when sewing on knits? Many knit fabrics work much better with a ball point or stretch needle. If machine contiues to skipp take it back and have the tech test may need a tweak on the needlebar/hook timing.

I actually do use stretch or ballpoint needles with knits so that's not the problem. It's possible another trip to the tech could help but, for the time being, I'm happy using it for sewing everything other than knits.

When I began to sew knits, I just sewed them on my old Pfaff, as that was my sewing machine - it did fine with a tiny ZZ stitch and I never had an issue - try a small ZZ - almost a striaght but very narrow ZZ, and a Schmetz stretch needle in a small size - 10 or 11, and see how it goes. :) Use the IDT and she should do a good job. BUT, if not, use your Brother! Different machines have different purposes, which is why having a bunch of them is so handy. ;)
