| Update on Our Chat with Traci Bautista of treiC Designs | By DianeSev on 1/20/11 12:33 PM |
|
We Chatted With Tracy Bautista of treiC Designs!

Did you catch our chat with Traci Bautista the other night?
We talked with Traci about "Collage and Mixed Media Design with Fabric".
Traci is the talented artist, designer and author behind treiC Designs, where she showcases her mixed-media approach to art. She is the author of the best-selling Collage Unleashed and the upcoming Doodles Unleashed. Her artwork has been featured in more than 40 craft publications, and she has been a regular guest artist on HGTV & DIY Networks' Craft Lab. She also has licensed artwork for an adhesive product line, Collage Pauge, and {kolLAJ} papercrafts.
With a degree in Graphic Design and Marketing, Traci transitioned from an 8-year stint in Silicon Valley to celebrating her 10th year as an independent artist/designer/teacher.
How does Traci go about her work? She finds that there are many things that inspire her, so she takes a lot of photos every day. She examines magazine layouts and does research online on the work of fashion illustrators and designers. She watches for the latest fashion and home trends for color inspiration. And she teaches.
During the chat, Traci discussed how collage can be incorporated into fabric design and then finally into garments.
She uses dyes, fabric paints, sprays and acrylics as well as markers and pens, pencils, and watercolors to create her designs. If she's creating something wearable, she makes sure to use fabric/textile paints and marker.
Some people are intimidated by doing collages, but she advises people to let go and paint freely. She enjoys doodling to create her drawings and is inspired by the fashion illustrator Erte. She also uses her photographs for inspiration.
Members were inspired by Traci's chat and wanted to rush right out and paint fabric!
Read the transcript of Traci's chat here.
We've chatted with lots of experts in the past. Check out our previous chats. |

PR Name: Knitters Delight
Full Name: Susan Leslie Davis
Birthday: December 7, 1974
Blog: http://knitters-delight.blogspot.com
How did you learn to sew?
I'm originally a knitter, but tried my hand at several quilts in my twenties, using a few quilting pattern books. Three years ago, after seeing so many blog posts from people who knit AND sew, I decided to give it a try. I took a free beginner's sewing class with the San Diego Continuing Education program. I have never looked back!
What aspect of sewing do you find most challenging?
Pushing past my comfort zone to try new techniques. It is easy for me to stick to my fun and fast knit projects. I have worked hard to try to change this using all of the inspiration I get from other sewing projects that I see online. Because of this, I have learned to make full bust alterations, fly-front zippers, among other techniques that I'm proud of learning.
Which sewing book do you refer to most often?
While I have a substantial book collection, since I love collecting books, I think I pull out "The New Complete Guide to Sewing" by Reader's Digest the most. Coming in a close second and third would be Power Sewing by Sandra Betzina and The Sewing Bible by Ruth Singer.
What are your sewing goals for this year
SWAP - Sewing With A Purpose! I am a new mother as of November 27th. I want to make sure I use my sewing time wisely by making beautiful clothes that both fit AND flatter my figure. I also want to go for quality over quantity.
What are you sewing right now?
I just finished sewing two cowl neck tops using Vogue 8634 and have cut the pattern out for anothger top using New Look 6816.
Pick your favorite pattern
That is a really tough one to answer. But if I had to pick one, its New Look 6735

I actually love all of the separates that this pattern offers.
What you love most about PatternReview?
I love going to the reviews before making a pattern up. It helps me pick the right size, make adjustments to the problem pieces, or even avoid patterns that just won't work for my frame or skill set.
Any other hobbies? I knit and quilt. I use to keep a salt water fish tank for fifteen years as well.
Your profession, where do you live?
I run a medical supply company in San Diego, California that creates placebo training products for nurses, pharmacy technicians, and emts.

| Announcing the Winter Wear Contest Winners! | By DianeSev on 1/11/11 4:39 PM |
|
Winter Wear Contest Winners
Sewing winter wear warms you twice, once when you're cutting and sewing the garment and once when you're wearing it. No...wait... That's what they say about firewood. But actually, you can say that about sewing winter wear too!
Winter wear in this contest is classified as something that you'd put away for summer months and that you wouldn't wear in spring, summer or autumn.
According to the rules, contestants were allowed to enter sewn, knit, and crocheted items. They could enter multiple items but were reminded that they'd be competing against themselves! Both sets (scarf and hat, for example) and individual items were also allowed.
The 44 participants in this contest did some cozy winter sewing. Look at the great winter wear they created! Just looking at these entries warms us too!
Now let's meet the winning contestants.
First Prize (by Member Vote):
JanaL for Self Drafted Women's Peacoat
JanaL decided that she really wanted to take her time on this project and enjoy every step it took to finish it.
She started off by self-drafting this pattern, using a peacoat from J. Crew as inspiration. It took her more than a month to draft and tweak this beauty. On the way, she consulted a variety of wonderful old (30+ years) pattern-drafting books at her local university library.
She made the jacket of felted wool coating that she got on sale and silk lining that she purchased in NYC.
She went all out on tailoring: padstitched collar and lapels, taped roll lines, bound buttonholes, welt pockets and a lot of hand stitching. She even edged her shoulder pads with horsehair braid, a technique she believes she saw in Kenneth King's Cool Couture.
DH suggested she add the flower (good fashion sense, DH!). She's pretty happy with the end result. And she finished it just in time for more snow!
Congratulations, JanaL!
| Random Entry Prize:
Rhonda in Montreal for Kwik Sew: 3806 Fleece Accessories

Rhonda in Montreal sewed up a storm with Kwik Sew 3806!
She made several pieces from this pattern: a hood (pictured above), a gaiter, mittens, fingerless gloves, socks and a wrist wallet.
She found the instructions easy to follow. Although the pattern called for a heavyweight stretch knit for this project, she decided to use polarfleece.
On the first piece she made, she used a combination of straight sewing and lots and lots of serging. On later pieces, she used a wide zig-zag between the folded edges and the main part. She thinks the technique gives the pieces a much nicer, felted look.
She highly recommends the hood for winter wear, because you can tuck it in closer around your ears and the hood's "collar" can be rolled up on your face to help you brave the cold wind!
Congratulations, Rhonda in Montreal!
|
And congratulations to all our contestants for their great winter wear!
We thank

| Chat with Designer Angela Wolf on Wednesday, January 12th | By DianeSev on 1/6/11 3:56 PM |
|
Chat with Designer Angela Wolf on Custom Couture and Dyeing Fabrics, Wednesday, January 12th at 9 PM Eastern Time (6 Pacific, 7 Mountain, 8 Central)!

Join us on Wednesday, January 12th at 9 PM EST for a chat with designer Angela Wolf on "Custom Couture and Dyeing Fabrics".
Fashion and sewing have been Angela’s passion since childhood.
“I used to sneak fabric out of my mother’s closet," Angela says. "But I was too young to understand patterns. So I would lie on the fabric, have my younger sisters draw an outline of my body with chalk onto the fabric, and then my creations would begin. I am happy to say my designing has come a long way since then.”
In 1994, with a bachelor's degree in business management from Illinois State University and a brand new sewing machine and serger as a graduation gift from her family, Angela started ABO APPAREL, offering custom apparel, alterations, and wardrobe planning.
An A-list clientele has given Angela more than sixteen years of experience dressing and fitting many diverse women and has enabled her to understand the different styles that compliment each individual woman. All these factors are taken into consideration for each piece that Angela designs for each individual client.
Impeccably tailored jackets with beautiful silk, hand-dyed charmeuse linings are a signature of Angela's work. Many of Angela's designs also include intricate hand-beading and custom trims. Styles range from Casual Resort Wear to Extravagant Evening Wear, always enhancing every woman that wears Angela's apparel.
Angela Wolf Ready-to-Wear was launched in 2010. Combining luxurious fabrics with a casual lifestyle was the main theme in creating this line and so far has been met with rave reviews from her clientele. Angela has since expanded her atelier to a 4,000 square-foot studio/showroom which is located in the heart of the Arts District of Benton Harbor, Michigan.
Professional tournament fishing has also inspired Angela to create a women’s sportswear line of apparel that will launch in the late spring of 2011.
Angela was a finalist in the 2009 Threads magazine Fluid Fabric Challenge and has appeared on the cover of the American Sewing Expo magazine. She was the winner of the Passion for Fashion Challenge at the 2008 American Sewing Expo. Her submission for the Passion for Fashion Challenge at the 2007 American Sewing Expo was selected the Audience Favorite.
View Angela's collection on her website, www.angelawolf.com, and visit her new blog, angelawolf.wordpress.com/, featuring fashion and sewing tips.
The chat is open to all Friends of PR members. Chat instructions will be posted on the PR home page on Wednesday morning.

8720 makes his legs look really short. I'd take 6" off the length, myself
2/6/11 3:52 AM
I love that coat (8720)! I could see myself wearing that in a different color!
I got my home catalogue and after seeing the cover immediately sent a picture of my Alexander McQueen knock off...they are going to use it in their "what are you sewing" feature in the next issue. 1232 is in my future
1/27/11 11:46 PM
@a7yrstitch: what a great idea!!
1/26/11 10:54 PM
8705 looks like it would modify into a great one piece swimsuit. Going to give it a try.
1/26/11 10:45 PM
8705 is the hotness.
1/26/11 6:58 PM
I saw this catalog today. I'm trying to get the bravery to wear 8705. Or maybe that's my incentive to exercise more.
1/26/11 6:56 PM
I soooo would have worn that 8705 20 years ago; maybe even 10. Where did the time go?!
1/26/11 3:32 PM
